First-Time Actor Julio Sabenorio Wows Audience with His Performance in EBC's Guerrero

It's his first acting project but it doesn't show at all. He underwent a workshop under Carlo Cuevas, who is the writer-director for the film Guerrero. The story revolves around a boxer named Ramon Guerrero (Genesis Gomez), who could get a set of trophies for the countless times he's lost matches. However, his kid brother Miguel (Julio Sabenorio) looks up to him as a hero and tirelessly cheers him on, whether he's preparing for a match or preparing to connect with the love of his life.

Julio is from Laguna and he said that he'd rather study than pursue stardom. He auditioned for the role and is not really from the production company's (Eagle Broadcasting Corporation) pool of talents.

"Marami po talagang nagaudition para dun sa role ni Miguel," revealed the director. "Noong una pa lang pong pumasok (Julio) sa set kung saan kami nag-papaaudition, unang tingin pa lang sa akin, umiyak na. Sobrang ano po itong batang ito, ninerbiyos."

Guerrero in the drama genre but there are also a lot of comic situations in the film, with an effortless delivery thanks to the palpable chemistry of Genesis and Julio. Newcomer Joyselle Cabanlong who plays the love interest of Ramon, as Abby, displays an infectious charm and sincerity in his adulation of the boxer's kid brother. Dahlia Talavera, mother of the commercial and TV actress Chelina Talavera, also has commendable acting chops especially in the scene where she overtly displays her disapproval of her son's participation in contact sports because she fears he might get injured really bad in the future.

By tapping new actors, what is seemingly the weakness of the movie is the film's major strength. Cuevas, as evidenced by his award-winning works, has a penchant for creating real, sincere, and innocent characters that people can relate to, like Hapi in EBC's sitcom Hapi ang Buhay, and this time, Ramon Guerrero. Genesis Gomez who plays the titular role is wedding photographer by profession.

He won the Best Director in Foreign Language for the film Walang Take Two at the International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema and the Best Newcomer Filmmaker of the Year at the World Film Awards in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Teaming up with Cuevas for the cinematography of Guerrero is Giancarlo Escamillas, who won the Best Cinematographer in a Foreign Language Film at the Madrid International Film Festival.

Like basketball, boxing can freeze time in Filipinos' lives. It is very close to every Filipino's hearts and in a lot of instances, the sport has unified the country as a nation. "Eto rin ang sport na literal na babagsak ka at kailangan mong bumangon," said Cuevas.

Guerrero is also the first venture of EBC Films whose vision is to produce inspirational material across different media platforms. "Filipinos are very resilient. Many calamities and even pressing national issues cannot beat their indomitable spirit as they hold on to their unwavering hope and strong faith. There is always a Guerrero in every Filipino," said Robert Capistrano of EBC Films.

Guerrero of EBC Films will be showing in theaters nationwide starting November 12. You may visit https://www.facebook.com/GuerreroEBCfilms/ for updates.
