Love takes on all forms on GMA Network’s newest primetimes series ‘Onanay’

Beginning August 6, love takes on all forms as GMA Network debuts its newest heart-warming primetime series, Onanay.

Onanay tells the unique story of Onay, a woman born with Achondroplasia or a bone growth disorder which impeded her growth. Because of this, she is often the subject of ridicule but she chooses to remain positive in life. She gave birth to two beautiful daughters—Maila and Natalie—who cannot be more different from one another. Despite a tragedy and traumatizing events, Onay’s motherly love remains pure and unconditional, the way every mother is to her child.

The series introduces new Kapuso Jo Berry, who takes on the role of Onay. Despite her condition, she is loving, kind, warm towards everyone, and chooses to always look at the brighter side of things.

Young and talented Kapuso actresses Mikee Quintos and Kate Valdez join together once more in headlining this drama as siblings Maila and Natalie, daughters of Onay.

Maila is a perfectly cheerful and obedient daughter who is willing to stand up to anyone who makes fun of her mother. She dreams of graduating and giving her family a comfortable life.

Natalie, on the other hand, is spoiled, arrogant, and thinks highly of herself. She is ashamed of her mother’s physical appearance, which is why she often takes out her frustration and anger on Onay.

The show also features the very special participation of Superstar Ms. Nora Aunor as Nelia, Onay’s supportive mother who will do anything for her child.

Joining them to play an equally important role is Ms. Cherie Gil as Helena, a former beauty queen and now a wealthy owner of an online fashion magazine. She is also Onay’s mother-in-law who will make her and Nelia’s life miserable.

Completing the powerhouse cast are Gardo Versoza as Dante, Nelia’s younger brother who will treat Maila as his own daughter; Wendell Ramos as Lucas, a rich and careless man who used to be an alcohol and drug addict who will later on play an important role in Onay’s life; Rochelle Pangilinan as Sally, Onay’s childhood friend who works at a beauty salon and is very supportive and endeared to Maila; Vaness Del Moral as Imelda, Lucas’ jealous and possessive wife; Enrico Cuenca as Oliver, a handsome school jock who will fall for Maila; and special guest Adrian Alandy as Elvin, the loving and responsible husband of Onay who fell in love with her because of her beautiful innate qualities.

Onanay is set to touch the hearts of viewers by showcasing the immeasurable power of love and how there is nothing that a mother wouldn’t do for her child.

The series is under the helm of esteemed director Gina Alajar with the creative team composed of creative director Roy Iglesias, creative head Richard Cruz, creative consultant Suzette Doctolero, headwriter Luningning Ribay, writers Obet VillelaGeng delos Reyes and Tina Samson-Velasco, and brainstormers Borj Danao and Brylle Tabora.
Onanay is created by the GMA Entertainment Group under the supervision of Senior Vice President Lilybeth G. Rasonable, Vice President for Drama Redgie A. Magno, Assistant Vice President for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy, Senior Program Manager Helen Rose S. Sese, and Executive Producer Nieva Sabit.

Don’t miss Onanay’s premiere this August 6 on GMA Telebabad.

Kapuso viewers abroad can also catch Onanay via GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. To check the program schedule for each territory, visit their official website at www.gmapinoytv.com

Abangan!

RESTORED VERSION of John and Marsha '85 Took 4,300 Man Hours to Restore!

Article and photos by Francis Lumahan

July 26, 2018 marked 90 years and a day after the Philippines’ King of Comedy, Dolphy had been born. And it is most fitting that it also be a date for premiere night of a digitally restored and remastered version of the late comedy king’s movie, John en Marsha ’85 Sa Probinsiya, shown at Cinema Centenario.

John en Marsha is the longest-running sitcom television series which run for 17 years from 1973 to 1990 while John en Marsha ’85 Sa Probinsiya was the seventh movie spawned by the series. The movie tells the story of how the Puruntong clan head to the province after John’s (Dolphy) aunt became bed-ridden thus placing a family out of their comfort zone and into the mundane country life.

This special screening was attended by the 3 remaining members of the main cast, namely: Evelyn 'Matutina' Bontogon-Guerrero, Madel de Leon and the Diamond Star, Maricel Soriano. Also in attendance are Ronnie Quizon and Eric Quizon.

Leo Katigbak, head of ABS-CBN Film Restoration Project, spoke passionately about their ongoing projects and more so about their intention of restoring 10 more Dolphy movies down the line. He says that the most people have forgotten or don’t know who and why Dolphy is the King of Comedy and by screening this movie would let one remember. He adds further that by restoring old Filipino films could we gain insight into the brilliance and greatness of the writers, producers, directors, and actors of the past.

The movie, John en Marsha ’85 Sa Probinsiya, took 4300 man hours to restore. The quality, according to Katigbak, “…is not as clear as a film that was shot yesterday but for a 30 year old film, the colors are still intact and after watching it, it just made me smile.”

ABS-CBN Film Restoration Project says that their next digitally restored film would be Omeng Satanasia and they are hoping to have it shown on the big screen by October.

"Tas nung 3rd day, sobrang sakit na talaga.

PHILIPPINE OPERA COMPANY’S “HARANA” CELEBRATE 10 TH YEAR WITH A SERIES OF ANNIVERSARY SHOW

After successful shows all over the country for the past 9 years and concert tours of Amsterdam, Canada and the United States of America, Philippine Opera Company’s
“HARANA” will celebrate it’s 10 th year with a series of shows entitled “HARANA10 … the anniversary show” on July 27-29 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

In 2008, POC created its own cultural arm “HARANA” as a vehicle to showcase the evolution of Philippine music through song and movement. Its numerous reviews from
Manila’s art cognoscenti and clamor for more shows further boosted “HARANA” to conquer the international scene when it went on a tour of Amsterdam in 2009. Upon the group’s return, the 2010 regional tour covering the cities of Cebu, Roxas, Antique, Bohol, Dumaguete and Palawan continued to reap more success and acclaim. For the early part of 2011, “HARANA” has performed in Bacolod, Ormoc, Tacloban and Samar.

“HARANA” is unique. When people look for a cultural show the choices are usually split into two categories — dance or song. You either get a group of cultural dancers, or a group of singers, or a choir. “HARANA”, however, showcases song, dance and drama all at the same time. POC have handpicked the most versatile and celebrated classical and musical theater singers in the country today to bring life and passion to these beautiful indigenous and Filipino classics.

The country is rapidly losing the value of Philippine music to foreign influences. Many people are no longer interested in listening to Filipino classics, composed by gifted Filipino geniuses.

This iconic romantic tradition is the penultimate test for the Pinoy macho in the early 1920’s to court the woman he fancies in their neighborhood. Accompanied by two to
OPERA three other male ‘barkadas’ with the guitar as the only musical instrument, the main male proponent would sing around two to three locally-written songs about the joys of love, and how one’s heart longs for the woman destined to be his wife. Widely practiced all over the Philippines up until World War II, the ‘harana’ is done at night when the folk are
already asleep, the ‘lady’ being courted would get up from her bed and together with her kinsfolk, the ‘window’ is opened as a polite gesture of appreciation until the rest of the songs are completed. “The ‘harana’ is quite similar to the balcony scene of William Shakepeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” but delivered in a medieval poetry.

The ‘harana’ or ‘kundiman’ became a mainstream musical style with veteran performers namely Diomedes Maturan and Ruben Tagalog popularizing it until the late 60’s.

Unfortunately, with the advent of newer music genres, ‘harana’ has quietly been left behind. Today, the young generation may not even know its real essence as far as
Filipino folk traditions are concerned. And that is the one singular reason why POC is reviving this beautiful Filipino culture,” says Ms. Karla Gutierrez, Artistic Director of the
Philippine Opera Company.

POC’S “HARANA” is a recipient of the 2nd Maria Carpena Memorial Award for the Arts and United Filipino-Canadian Associations in British Columbia 2016 Heroes Award.
In recognition of the POC’s distinguished achievements, leadership and dedication on making a positive impact in advancing the image of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in
the community, “HARANA” in 2016 was awarded the Image Award from the Federation of Filipino American Association. Philippine Opera Company also received the Image Award Certificate of Recognitions from the United States House of Representatives.

The word “harana” is a Tagalog word (the predominant Philippine dialect) that connotes a traditional form of courtship in which a man woos a woman’s affection by singing love songs.

Philippine Opera Company’s cultural repertoire showcases the evolution of Philippine music through song, movement, and drama. The creation of each “HARANA” suite is a
product of thorough research with the commitment to preserve indigenous Philippine music and its appropriate dance and folklore. It also aims to restructure and enhance
these research findings to evolve repertoires suited to the demands of contemporary theater; and to promote international goodwill through performances at home and
abroad. The result is an absolute feast to the senses.

“HARANA10 … the anniversary show” will showcase the best of all the Filipino composers from different music genres --- Nicanor Abelardo, Ryan Cayabyab, Willy Cruz, Francisco Santiago, Antonio Molina, Resti Umali, George Canseco, Ernani Cuenco, Levi Celerio, Jose Estrella, Constancio De Guzman and Felipe de Leon to name a few.

The show will feature Philippine theater’s celebrated singers – Karla Gutierrez, Melisa Camba, Cloi Sugano, Zscharmaine Barretto, Nazer Salcedo, Noel Rayos, Greg de Leon and Ron Biñas.

“HARANA10 … the anniversary show” is a must-see production for every Filipino who wants to hear our very own ‘ kundiman ’ music amidst all other music genres, which are
now perpetuating our local music scene. This will also serve as a musical treat for foreigners as an initial step to immerse themselves in a truly authentic Filipino music environment with the hope of making them understand our country’s cultural and musical heritage.

“HARANA10 … the anniversary show” will have a series of shows on July 27 (8:00 pm), July 28 (3:00 pm and 8:00 pm) and July 29 (3:00 pm) at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

For ticket sales please call Philippine Opera Company at 09267246859 or TicketWorld at 891-9999 or follow Philippine Opera Company on Facebook.

Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! Relives the 70s This August

Once upon a time there were 15 Ateneans who decided that they really liked Apolinario Mabini as well as music, so they decided to form a band and name it after him, shotening it to Apo. However, in real life, people must go on their separate ways. Danny Javier, who was not part of the original 15, joined the remaining 2, Jim Paredes and Boboy Garovillo, in the early 70s, during college. Thus, the Apo Hiking Society was born, making their mark in 1973 as they gave their farewell concert in the Meralco Theater.

Once upon a time, more than 4 decades and a half later, people from 9Works Theatrical just finished performing at a gig with Boboy. Little did they know, the wheels would start spinning for their 2nd original Filipino musical that night. The young but prestigious theater company, after all, was known for being made up mostly of Repertory Philippines alumni. It is no surprise that they are drawn to Broadway and English classicals. However, their collaboration with Sandbox Collective in early 2018 was a start of a new direction for the group. Mounting orginal Filipino musicals must've been interwoven in the threads of fate, because after that performance with Boboy, he casually tapped artistic director Robbie Guevara on the shoulder and mentioned having Apo songs made into a musical. "I was screaming inside my head, because I had more or less written an outline before that," said Robbie.

"Ever since 9Works Theatrical (9WT) was established, we already want to come up with new material, we already wanted to come up with new material, not just Broadway musicals," said Santi Santamaria during the press launch held almost a month ago. Since their partnership with Globe Live in American idiot, the telecommunications cmpany has always got their back. According to Denise Seva, the director of Globe Live, it has always been their advocacy to help out the theater and the live music scene. Joe Caliro, affirms that the Globe Team was hands-on in developing the script and the production design side-by-side with the creative minds of 9works. Santi affirmed that all the members of the APO Hiking Society were very happy to support the project upon the first meeting. They agreed not just regarding the use of their songs but also to rearrange the music to suite the material.

APO Hiking Society shared messages of hope and optimism in the midst of dark times. Jim Paredes, Boboy Garrovillo, and Danny Javier openly spoke up against the government when performing to audiences all over the country, fully aware of the danger that they were getting themselves into. Their songs such as “Panalangin” and “Show Me A Smile” served as reminders of hope and steadfastness. The iconic song “Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo," which is inscribed on Our Lady of EDSA Shrine, was reportedly written by Paredes in three minutes after he was inspired by People Power.

Director Robbie Guevara wrote the story loosely based on the start of APO Hiking Society as collegiates at the Ateneo De Manila University. Set during the era of Martial Law, Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! tells the story of a motley crew of students getting ready to take on a singing and songwriting competition. Their lives are seemingly carefree at first, allowing them to focus on their music—which is undoubtedly good, but yet to be discovered. However, their idyllic youth doesn’t last for long. Even if their passion for music burns bright, life gets in the way. Despite the hardships, they emerge from their struggles to prove the power of friendship and solidarity—which is what APO Hiking Society also shared with Filipinos over the course of their long career. The group’s existence outlasted Martial Law, and their music inspired people across various generations.

“We captured in songs a lot of what it is like to grow up in the Philippines,” says Paredes, who himself was active in protesting against Martial Law. APO Hiking Society recognized the power of music to uplift people, which their songs continue to do today. Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! pays respect to that by reliving the songs onstage with a moving story which is about love, friendship, overcoming obstacles, and the sheer joy in living in the moment.

More than a walk down memory lane, Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! is a thrilling spin on APO Hiking Society’s songs by musical director Daniel Bartolome. Featuring some of APO’s greatest hits like “Pumapatak Na Naman Ang Ulan,” “Panalangin” and “Paano” among others, the musical is a treat for fans and their families. Inspired by the early days of the legends of OPM, the musical is a homage to APO and their illustrious history. Even if you know the songs by heart, they won’t exactly sound the same. “You'll notice right away that something new is added to the original,” says musical director Daniel Bartolome, “…There's ragtime, swing, straight rock.” The musical offers reinvented renditions of the songs with new and unexpected arrangements that will surprise even APO Hiking Society’s diehard listeners.

“Learning about this musical is really exciting for us because there is nothing more pleasant than to have your body of work through four decades be staged by a successfully-known production company, and be given new life in a medium that we as a group have not quite immersed ourselves in,” says Garrovillo. He originally suggested the idea of a musical to director Guevara in 2013. “We also feel comfortable that our material is in good hands. I’m more excited now to see the production fulfill their aspirations and different takes on our music.”

Leading the cast is Mark Bautista who has just returned from Seattle Repertory’s staging of Here Lies Love, together with Jon Philippe Go, Jobim Javier, Alfritz Blanche, Jef Flores, Jon Abella, and Vyen Villanueva. Joining them are Rita Daniela, Marika Sasaki, Sab Jose, Raul Montesa, and Noemi Gonzales.

Rounding out the cast are Gian Gloria, Shalee Vicencio, Peachy Atilano-Guevara, Anton Posadas, Jourdan Bartolome, and Derrick Gozos.

Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! is a brand new original Filipino musical with music by Danny Javier, Jim Paredes and Boboy Garrovillo, musical arrangements and orchestrations by Daniel Bartolome and Orly dela Cruz.

Eto Na! Musikal nAPO!  is written and directed by Robbie Guevara, along with Jonjon Martin as dramaturg, Dingdong Rosales as assistant director, Daniel Bartolome as musical director, PJ Rebullida as choreographer, Shakira Villa Symes as lightning designer, Joey Mendoza as set designer, Eric Pineda as costume designer, Dong Calingacion as technical director, Rards Corpus as sound designer, Myrene Santos as hair and makeup designer, Ronan Ferrer as vocal supervisor and Cathy Azanza-Dy as stage coach.

Heading the production team are executive producers Santi Santamaria (9 Works Theatrical) and Joe Caliro (Globe Live), with Globe Live Events Director Denise Seva, the 9 Works Theatrical Team - Anna Santamaria as company manager, Jonjon Martin as PR manager, GM Hernandez as marketing manager, Arma Bonilla as stage manager, Gian Nicdao as graphic design manager and JC Inocian as photographer.

Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! will be shown at Maybank Performing Arts Theater, Bonifacio Global City, on August 3-5, 10-12, 17-19 & 24-26, 2018, at 8:00pm on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, and 3:00pm on Saturdays & Sundays.
