FILM REVIEW: Family History

Jim Carrey tried to show he could do serious roles before with Number 23. I guess it is not an abberation to say that Michael V is somewhat the Jim Carrey of the Philippines. However, the directorial debut of Michael V. (popularly known as Bitoty) which is Family History is no The Number 23 since there was no radical change in his look. But, he did do a Ben Affleck by casting himself in the lead role.

During the first few minutes of the film, if you watch Pepito Manaloto, the setup is very familiar. There's him, Alex, a graphic designer married for a long time to his beautiful wife, May (Dawn Zulueta), and then a popular loveteam Biguel play boyfriend and girlfriend. Bianca Umali play Jenna, the girlfriend of his musician son Malik (Miguel Tanfelix). However, despite a successful career and a beautiful wife, he discovers an illness can change the way he looks at his marriage and his job.

Frankly, I understood the need for fanfare given that it is risky if there was none since this is a film made by GMA productions after 3 years in cooperation with Mic Test Entertainment. By fanfare, I meant Alex reminding people that he is Bitoy by always being ready with a punchline when the going gets tough. It would have been interesting to see him do a straight drama film though since he was able to handle the dramatic bits quite well and was able to hold his own against Dawn, whose eyes speak volumes even if her character was soft-spoken. The way Alex character was written also shows a unique quality of a Filipino, which is to actually use humor to hide everything even if things are boiling up inside.

This film has a very strong supporting cast too particularly Kakai Bautista who played May's BFF. I think it is high time she gets a leading role. There's also this short dude who played the bully. He really made an impact despite his character being quite one-dimensional when it comes to writing. My favorite scene of him was the look of awe and perhaps penance on his face as he finally watched Malik's band play their new song onstage. There's also this mobile phone sales staff in a scene with Alex and I am pretty sure you will not forget her just as you would not forget the number 46 after you watch the film.

If there's anything that needs improvement, I think it is the musical scoring. There are times when it's distracting, especially that playful melody when something is very serious and Alex suddenly wants to be funny. It would be better if there was less scoring throught the film. The best technical aspects of the film is the variety of camera angles, the intercuts involving animation which serve as Alex' imagination, and the prostethics a character wore which was so real I thought this person actually sacrificed for the role.

Family History runs for almost 2 hours but you will really never notice the time since whatever it says makes a lot of sense.

Dennis Trillo, Jerald Napoles, Matteo Guidicelli play as drug pushers in Mina-Anud

Mina-Anud, WINNER of the Basecamp Colour Prize at Singapore’s Southeast Asia Film Financing (SAFF) Forum in 2017

Dennis Trillo, Jerald Napoles, Matteo Guidicelli star in a provocative and socially relevant movie that is based on a true story, titledMina-Anud.
The events in the film are based on real-life events that took place in 2009 in Eastern Samar, where bags of cocaine were washed up on the shores of a fishing village that turned the lives of the residents 180 degrees.
Being a relevant and a timely quality film, Mina-Anud won the Basecamp Colour Prize at Singapore’s Southeast Asia Film Financing (SAFF) Forum in 2017.
Established in 2016, SAFF serves as an exciting platform in assembling the best feature-length film concepts and the top filmmakers and producers from Southeast Asia and Europe to meet with international co-producing partners, festival programmers, distributors, commissioners, and financiers.
Mina-Anud is about an impoverished community where the characters succumb to the temptations of money and material stuff through an illegal activity.
It tells the story of people who resorted to illegal drug selling to earn instant cash and get a taste of luxuries of life, such as flat screen televisions, motorcycles, cars, and jewelries.
Known as a dramatic actor, Dennis takes on the role of a drug pusher.
He plays Ding, the leader of Borongan surfers, who is also a family man with issues with his wife Gina, the breadwinner.
Jerald portrays Carlo, one of the best surfers in the village but seems to always come as second best. A single guy caring for his aging grandmother, Carlo dreams of joining an international surfing competition and marrying a Caucasian girlfriend.
Being unsatisfied with their lives, Ding and Carlo saw a chance to improve their lives by giving in to the temptation of selling illegal drugs for money.
No doubt that this is one Dennis’s most daring roles yet in this timely movie.
Meanwhile, Jerald will prove his mettle as an actor when he was chosen for the role for which a number of good looking and highly competent actors auditioned for.
He explains, “Nag-audition ako dito, madaming nag-audition because the story is inspired by true events.
“Nabanggit na sa ‘kin ito noon ni Direk Kerwin, tapos biglang gagawin na pala talaga ni Regal and Epicmedia.
“Hindi ako nagdalawang isip na mag-audition para makuha ang role.
“Hanggang ngayon may mga kaibigan ako sa industriya na nagsasabing, uyy gusto kong gumawa ng ganyang film.
“Kasi very interesting talaga ito. Syempre ginalingan namin lahat dito para maikwento ng maganda ang story. Totoong istorya na dapat makita ng mga tao sa sinehan.”
Joining them is Matteo Guidicelli, who portrays Paul, an aspiring celebrity and TV show host who deals party drugs to Manila’s elite and showbiz circles.
Matteo narrates: “I'm so happy to be part of the film. The Filipinos deserve to see this film.
“Sana they give us a chance to entertain them and inform them at the same time. I am thankful na makapagbigay kami nang ganitong klaseng kwento.”
Interestingly, the film’s director, Kerwin Go, has seen with his own eyes the true events for which this film is based on.
“I was there and witnessed this first hand. The characters in the film are all based on friends and acquaintances who gave in to the temptation of easy money. Some made it out with their wallets heavier, some weren’t lucky and would up in jail,” said Kerwin.
Joining the cast are Alvin Anson, Mara Lopez, Anthony Falcon, Marc Felix, Lou Veloso, Richard Manabat, Dionne Monsanto, Elia Ilano, Lui Manansala, and Luke Landrigan.
Showing only in cinemas nationwide on August 21. Mina-Anud was chosen as the Closing Film of Cinemalaya 2019 on August 10, at the CCP 9pm.

GMA Network receives Diamond Creator Award for reaching 10 million YouTube subscribers

YouTube’s Southeast Asia Director of Content Partnerships and Business Development Vishal Sarin (third from left) with Kapuso personalities (L-R) Atom Araullo, Bianca Umali, Michael V., Jessica Soho, and Kyline Alcantara.

Leading media conglomerate GMA Network celebrates another milestone as the GMA Entertainment channel recently surpassed 10 million subscribers on YouTube, thus joining an elite group of content creators in Southeast Asia that have also achieved such a feat.

With this accomplishment, the Network formally received on July 23 the Diamond Creator Award, a recognition given by YouTube to content creators that have reached 10 million subscribers. Present in the ceremonial turnover were GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon; President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr.; Executive Committee Vice Chairman Joel G. Jimenez; Executive Vice President and CFO Felipe S. Yalong; GMA New Media, Inc. (NMI) President and COO Judd Gallares; and GMA NMI Senior Vice President and General Manager Dennis Caharian. The Diamond Play Button was awarded by YouTube’s Southeast Asia Director of Content Partnerships and Business Development Vishal Sarin, and Content Partnerships Philippines Country Lead Pablo Mendoza.

Through NMI, the Network’s technology arm, GMA forged a partnership with YouTube dubbed the YouTube Player for Publishers (“YT PfP”) in mid-2017 that has enabled viewers everywhere to watch official, full episodes of GMA programs online. The partnership not only supports the anti-piracy efforts of GMA Network, but more significantly addresses the millennial video viewing habits that demand access to premium content when they want, wherever they may be. The YT PfP partnership was an enabler for GMA as it aided strategy for boosting YouTube views and hastening the acquisition of subscribers. It also allowed for a more robust content archive that used to only house show highlights, recaps, behind-the-scene videos, among others.

From only 1.6 million subscribers at the start of the YT PfP agreement in June 2017, this soared past 10 million in May this year. As of December 2018, the GMA Network YouTube channel’s rank improved from being in the Top 200 in 2017 to being among the Top 50 worldwide.

“We are very gratified that GMA has reached quite an achievement and it is translated into about four times growth [in watch time] year-on-year so that’s enough reason for us to be really happy. This is the work of many people and they are all here as we receive this Diamond Creator Award,” said Gozon.

Meanwhile, YouTube’s Sarin said, “We congratulate GMA for growing their channel to more than 10 million subscribers. This is a great milestone as there are only five media networks in Southeast Asia that have received the Diamond Creator Award and GMA is one of them.”

GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon (right) formally receives the YouTube Diamond Play Button from YouTube’s Southeast Asia Director of Content Partnerships and Business Development Vishal Sarin (left).

Of the achievement, Gallares shared, “Our mandate is to lead GMA’s transformation from a media and entertainment giant into a dominant multi-platform content provider worldwide. YouTube has in recent years been a strategic ally in this regard, as it has not only helped us expand GMA’s online footprint but it has also been key to building preference for the GMA brand. This recognition affirms that we are on track.”

Caharian further added that they were just showcasing the output of GMA Entertainment and how they help in making sure that their content can also be discovered online. “At the end of the day, what attracts a lot of viewers is still the quality of the content, so congratulations to GMA Entertainment. We’d also like to thank the viewers for their support, and we’d like them to know that many projects are in the pipeline for more viewing fun.”

Since its launch in November 2006, the GMA Entertainment channel now has 11.8 billion lifetime views. Total subscribers are currently at 11.1 million, a million more in a span of less than three months.

Other Kapuso YouTube channels include GMA News for daily video clips from the Network’s news programs, now with 4.1 million subscribers; GMA Public Affairs for documentaries, docudrama, and news magazine shows, now with 6.1 million subscribers; GMA Playlist for heartfelt song renditions from various Kapuso stars; GMA Playground for some of the Network’s child-friendly programs; and GMA Regional TV for the top stories from the regions.
