Of Rain, Nadine Lustre, and a Werehorse

After VIVA Films released the official trailer of Ulan on Friday, 8th of February, the outpouring of support from netizens was instantaneous.

#UlanTrailer hit the no.1 spot in the country’s trending topics, followed closely by Maya, Nadine Lustre, Carlo Aquino, and Direk Ayrin – all major players in what already appears to be a much-awaited film this summer.

Tagged as a romantic drama, Ulan tells the story of Maya who was raised by her grandmother. As a child, Maya became aware of the mythical creature called “Tikbalang” (werehorse) and the superstition that rain pours in the middle of a sunny day when two of these creatures are being wed. According to her grandmother, it means that heaven is not in favour of this union.

As a young woman, Maya is a hopeless romantic. She works in a publishing company as an editorial assistant. She has fallen in love and has been heartbroken twice. And then she meets Peter who is kind, thoughtful, helpful, and every bit a boyfriend material. But Maya realizes that each time she’s onto something good, rain falls all of a sudden.
Must she now take it as a bad omen? Is it heaven’s way of telling her that she’s about to face a bitter fate?

Breathing life to the character of Maya is Multimedia Princess Nadine Lustre. She was personally chosen by writer-director Irene Emma Villamor who describes her as “a modern Filipina and really has that depth to understand concepts like this. And brave enough to plunge in to a role of Maya.”

From the very start, Nadine showed dedication to immerse herself in the role and to connect with her director. Direk Irene further shares, “Nadine and I sat on the first day of shoot and we talked for almost an hour, naka-costume na siya nun, ready for blocking na. But I had to pause and
we just sat away from the crowd and talked about the bigger things in life. About what this movie means to me and to her. About our nervousness. And I said to her this is going to be our journey together, because Maya has been there with me since I was young.”

It was for a Film class way back in 1999 when Direk Irene created a 5- minute narrative about a girl named Maya. “Her dream was to climb a tree in their backyard,” she elaborates, “but her mother would always catch her and reprimand her.” Until one day, she finally climbed it, “and saw what a fantastic view it was - roofs of different corrugated, rusty metals, top of other trees, some birds. And she was wishing her mother could also see it.”

“That was really the germ of the character Maya, and she never left me since,” declares this director who brought us the certified blockbuster movies “Camp Sawi”, “Meet Me in St. Gallen”, and “Sid & Aya: Not a Love Story.”

“She evolved into a short story when I was already a script continuity supervisor in 2004-2005. By this time, I was reading Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Allende stories - all those fantastic stories with magic realism elements. So I wrote about Maya seeing tikbalangs, and the mother became the Lola. And I love the rain so nagsama-
sama na siya sa utak ko.”

“Direk Joyce caught me writing and read what I wrote and said to turn it into a screenplay so I did,” Direk Irene concludes. Ulan is her first screenplay. The other female director serves as this movie’s Creative Producer.

Getting Carlo Aquino to play Peter was a breeze. “We had breakfast just to talk about the role, and he said nakwento ko na sa kanya dati yung concept so of course he'll do it. Wala nang pitch pitch!” Direk Irene enthuses.

She commends the award-winning actor for being “so good in
understanding the character and finding connections with the role. He makes my job so much easier because I don't explain a lot when I talk to him. There's a click that happens and there he is, right there being Peter.”

Ulan also features Marco Gumabao and AJ Muhlach, the most promising actors of their generation, as Maya’s ex-lovers.

Young Maya is played by Ella Ilano, while the grandmother is played by Ms. Perla Bautista.

The biggest challenges of this film were creating the rain effect which happened almost every day and deciding on how the tikbalang would look like. “Our tikbalang took 3 (look) tests just to decide on what is best,” reveals Direk Irene.

They asked themselves, “Sino ba ang nakakita na ng tunay na
tikbalang? Di ba si batang Maya? So ano itsura no’n?”  In the end, the inspiration came from the paper mache works of the artisans they encountered while filming in Pila, Laguna. She says, “We decided on that look (for the tikbalang), and acknowledge the crudeness and the innocence of it all.”

Direk Irene is grateful and proud to be able to bring this kind of film to mainstream. “Hindi biro ang sugal ng VIVA (for producing) and N2 (for line producing)…We were doing something different…I have all these people in the production na kakapit-kamay at laging susubok at hindi takot magkamali – my staff and cast,” says the director who is admired by many.

Ulan is a product of hard work and passion. Part of the team is the award-winning cinematographer Neil Daza.

Rivermaya’s ‘90s classic song “Ulan” is turned into a much subdued ballad by OST Princess Janine TeƱoso, making it the film’s official theme song. “Heto na Naman” by Rice Lucido is part of the soundtrack.

For Nadine Lustre, who was hailed for her performance in her last movie “Never Not Love You”, this is a new opportunity to shine outside a love team. “I’m really, really excited kasi maganda talaga ‘yung story; it’s more about self-love,” she said in an interview.

How Maya cultivates self-love as the plot unravels is something to look forward to.

Catch Ulan in cinemas nationwide beginning March 13, 2019.

Clique 5 and Belladonnas Brought Down the Dome with This is Me

Sure, more familiar names in showbiz like Anna Ramsey (who brought the house down with her torch rendition of And I Am Telling You), Arron Villaflor, Hashtag CK, and Jak Roberto  did good in their special numbers, But, those who truly shined and were spectacular are the concert headliners themselves: Clique 5 and Belladonnas.

Title This is Me which is not to be confused with the Sarah Geronimo concert, the show which was held at the SM North EDSA Skydome last Feb. 24 is half-burlesque and half-avant garde. Sure, the costumes and the LED panels were bright and colorful but the powerful performances were augmented instead of being upstaged by this.

I think the group should focus more on their showmanship and dance numbers rather than the song numbers since the first two are clearly their strengths. Even though some members are just new, their flair for drama was evident in numbers like the Buwan dance interpretation (Rie and Gab), Cell Block Tango (Belladonnas), and Marco's Magic Mike number. Yes, his sexy derriere was dramatic.

If Marco is the clear leader of Clique 5, Quinn is the queen of the Belladonnas. She got thrown into the air, had to be suspended in the air with aerial silk and bamboo, and bedazzled everyone in her black and gold ensemble singing Queen of the Night.

Sure, some say sexy themed performances or burlesque to be precise, were popular two decades or so ago. But, with talent and stage presence like they have, they will be timeless and this is true. They might be underdogs right now but time will surely be kind to those like them with so much passion and potential.

The two groups were formed and are managed by the 3:16 Events and Talent Management Company owned by Len Carrillo.

Playing a very special role in the series is Empress Schuck as Wena, a doting yet naĆÆve department store saleslady who falls for Benjo.

Behind this engrossing drama is the creative team composed of Creative Director Aloy Adlawan; Creative Consultant Denoy Navarro Punio; Headwriter Gina Marissa Tagasa; Writers Maria Prescilla Hidalgo and Anna Aleta Nadela; and Brainstormers Hilda Marcelino and Roda Sulit Marino.

The series is another original creation of the GMA Drama group under the supervision of Senior Vice President for Entertainment Group Lilybeth G. Rasonable; Vice President for Drama Redgie AcuƱa-Magno; Assistant Vice President for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy; Senior Program Manager Cathy Ochoa Perez, Executive Producer Omar Sortijas.

REASONS TO CATCH BALLET PHILIPPINES’ ROMEO AND JULIET THIS LOVE MONTH

Since it opened its 49th Season, the country’s premiere dance company, Ballet Philippines, has been elevating the experience of dance. From the time audiences enter the CCP’s Main Lobby up to the moment they take their seats inside the theater, and even as they leave the premises, Ballet Philippines has been making ballet weekends an experience not to be missed.

A POWER HOUSE CAST
This month, the company is bringing back a timeless classic: Romeo and Juliet. Choreographed by National Artist for Dance and Ballet Philippines Artistic Director, Alice Reyes, this full-length ballet will feature the powerful music of Prokofiev. Dancing the lead role of Romeo on special evenings is internationally celebrated danseur, Joseph Gatti. He joins BP Principal Dancer Denise Parungao who will play Juliet. The Manila Symphonic Orchestra joins the pair, making it a complete feast for the senses. Just as powerful, are the performances of lead dancers Ronelson Yadao and Monica Gana as well as Victor Manguad and Jemima Reyes. Alice Reyes shares, “It has been such a heady experience for us all at rehearsals—each pair with their own dynamic interpretation and dramatic portrayals of the roles of the two lovers.”

BERNAL’S BELOVED VERONA REVITALIZED
Grand sets by National Artist Salvador Bernal—perhaps the most opulent ever to be mounted on the sacred stage of the CCP—were revitalized with the help of Mr. Andy Locsin just for this performance. His father, National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin was a staunch supporter of the company. He also particularly loved Ballet Philippines’ Romeo and Juliet when it first premiered on stage. As tribute to his father, Andy Locsin thought to extend his most generous support to the revitalization of Bernal’s grand sets.

BUBBLY, ROSES AND PORTRAITS AT THE THEATER
To set the mood for an evening of romance, Ballet Philippines and Fifi L’Amour will be serving rose bubbly pre show at the lobby of the CCP Main Theater. Roses in full bloom from Island Rose will also be given out to audiences! And while many will enjoy taking selfies and other snapshots for the Gram in front of a stunning floral photo wall, you will want to arrive extra early to get your portraits done to immortalized this very special night. Everyone during performance nights of Ballet Philippines’ Romeo and Juliet will truly feel the love!

JULIET’S POTION IN YOUR HANDS
A scent specially compounded for audiences of Ballet Philippines during the Romeo and Juliet performances, Juliet’s Potion is a 100% pure parfum with top notes of Bergamot and Neroli which opens up to reveal heady essences of Rose de Mai and Orris. Bottom notes of White Musk, Moss, Mate and Patchouli linger on skin. Audiences of Romeo and Juliet can take home their very own bottle of Juliet’s Potion, which will envelop the senses in love and romance.

ROMANTIC RAFFLE PRIZES A PLENTY
In celebration of love month, Ballet Philippines will also be raffling off prizes to make date night truly unforgettable. Win a luxurious overnight stay for two (2) at Discovery Primea with complimentary lunch/dinner at the Tapenade Restaurant. Audiences also get a chance to enjoy a staycation for two (2) at Deluxe Room on the Main Wing of the Bellevue Hotel. This will come with a complimentary breakfast as well as dinner at the CafĆ© d’Asie.

A lucky pair will also find themselves indulging in the finest culinary creations at Gallery Chele. Exquisitely crafted jewelry from Tim Tam Ong will also be raffled off. Several members of the audience could also find themselves coming home to a stunning bouquet of florals from Island Rose!

NEVER AN ENDING SWEETER THAN THIS
To cap off an exhilarating evening at the ballet, chocolates from Theo and Philo will be shared to audiences as they leave the theaters. It is a small token from the company to let supporters and even first time viewers feel the love. THEATER REVIEW: Miong

Miong was first staged in 1998, the 100th anniversary of Philippine Independence. It ran for 25 shows at the Aguinaldo theater and was revived as a touring production in 2002. Some of the main cast included Robert SeƱa, Miguel Abraham, and Chari Arespacochaga. There was even a cast recording album with Lea Salonga and Ariel Rivera

Unlike two decades ago, one wouldn't just remember Emilio "Miong" Aguinaldo as the first president of the republic. Because of historical artifacts as well as his portrayal in films as somewhat of a person who had dealings in the shadows, to put it bluntly, some even think he was an actual traitor who robbed Bonifacio of the rightful presidency. As I write this, it would've been a few days after a controversial letter from Aguinaldo went on display at the Leon Gallery.

The musical doesn't complicate things by dealing with politics or trying to prove Miong's moral compass. Instead, it treads the path of a usual autobiographical work by starting from his birth during the Holy Week of 1869 up to the monumental first flag ceremony in Kawit, Cavite during the declaration of Philippine Independence. What makes this unique, though, thanks to it having a female director, is the way it highlighted how the women in his life help pushed him to realize what he wants and to do what he can to get it.

While the rest of the main cast and ensemle did really good, Tim Pavino should be commended for having all that stamina to go through a different range of emotions while being onstage around 90% or so of the time. I doubt if he even has time to drink for more than a minute while the show is going on since the script did a very good job of focusing on him. He certainly had the maturity and presence needed for the role.

Noel Rayos' portrayal of Berong was dynamic, Lani Ligot's Kapita Teneng very forceful along with Meynard PeƱalosa's, the latter looking very menacing every time he appears to the point that you'd actually half-expect to see Spaniard soldiers firing at random suddenly.

The technical aspects of this musical deserve praise like the functional and transformative set design of Dennis Marasigan, the rich tones of John Batalla's lights, and the intricate patterns of Bonsai Cielo's ternos. If there's anything I'd like to admit, it would've been the red sleeve loop of Miong towards the end which looked straight out of an anime. Dexter M. Santos' choreography is breathtaking as expected and I especially enjoyed the playfulness of the San Bartolome bit.

This musical is a must-see for people who just want to know about the life of Miong, how a dominant mother can be good or bad for a future historical figure, and how everything seems to get Disney-fied when Cara Barredo lights up the stage with her crystal clear voice.

This production by Repertory Philippines runs at the Onstage Greenbelt 1 until March 10. Shows are at 3:30pm and 8pm depending on the date. For complete info, please call Ticketworld at 891-9999 or visit www.ticketworld.com.ph.
