FILM REVIEW: Hihintayin Kita sa Langit

Writer: Mark Anthony Cabrera

Last February 27, 2017, the restored and remastered version of Hihintayin Kita sa Langit by acclaimed director, Carlos Siguion-Reyna, was premiered at Glorietta Cinemas 5 and 6. Originally shown in 1991, this classic film is an adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights except that instead of the moors, the setting is transposed to the tropical beaches and ocean cliffs. The main characters, Gabriel (Gomez) and Carmina (Zulueta) are introduced as children. Gabriel, a peasant boy, is picked off the streets by the Salvador patriarch to become an adopted son. Carmina is happy with her new "brother" but her blood brother Milo begins to be filled with jealousy and resentment towards the new family addition. When Gabriel and Carmina grow up, the passion of their great love challenges the claustrophobic structures of social order, propriety, class system, and strict family tradition. However, reality sets in and the lovers part because of the differences in their socioeconomic status. Gabriel, fueled by bitterness, returns to exact revenge on all. He went to Manila in pursuit of greater things with the promise that he’ll come back to be worthy of Carmina’s love. Carmina was surprised at Gabriel’s comeback. She never imagined that the ragged boy she once loved now looked like the prince she always dreamed of.

SPOILER (HIGHLIGHT TEXT TO VIEW): It is worth noting that there was a scene in the film when Milo’s men ganged up and beat up Gabriel and Milo even peed on Gabriel’s face ( something familiar done by Baron Geisler to Ping Medina.Sorry Baron, Michael de Mesa was an original for it.) Tragedy strikes, and both the innocent and the guilty are swept by the violent surge of lust, passion, remorse, and retribution. Hearts are torn, destinies are overturned and there are no real winners in the end.

The Cinema Classics is an effort of the ABS-CBN Film Restoraiton group headed by Leo Katigbak. The mini-festival runs until March 7 with screenings in Glorietta and Trinoma cinemas.
