UP Rep opens year-long theater season with ‘Intersection’
One is set in a street that’s remote and unfrequented, while the other is set in the congested shanties in the city. The first bears a shadowy theme so as to hide the horrors of commissioned deaths, while the other is intentionally light and bright to highlight life in the rubbles.
The UP Repertory Company was founded in 1972 by Behn Cervantes and has been known for staging socially relevant plays in the sanctum of the UP Diliman Campus. It's unique brand of political theater is guided by it's core principle: Repleksyon ng Pangangailangan ng Nakararami.
Eskinita has a rather simple premise: a woman needs to transport the corpse of her late husband from their humble home all the way to the cemetery. Cast members are Diane Formoso, Jzar Tabilin, Sarah Valdez, Rej Duka, Gio Potes, Ian, Cy Zinampan, and Victor Avecilla.
On the other hand, Streetlight Manifesto features four main characters: a police investigator,a journalist, and two hitmen. A lone streetlight along a decrepit road is where their paths cross, as dead bodies start to mysteriously show up. The play stars Malvin Ramos, Jomar Carpena, Roseball Toledo, and Roi Neri.
