Hapi ang Buhay the Musical: Filipino Bollywood?

The comedy TV series, Hapi ang Buhay, reinvents itself as a musical full length movie set to roll out nationwide. Its red carper premiere happened last September 21, 2018 at SM Megamall Cinemas 3 and 4. Your favorite characters from the Net 25 series break out in song and dance as this musical comedy will be sure to entertain, as well as teach a moral or two.

When Alfajor, the local moneylender, is found unconscious in an alley, Barangay Kaysaya is thrown into confusion and musical frenzy; with special participation from veteran actors Antonio Aquitania, Victor Neri and Mike Magat as you have never seen them before.

The musical is written and directed by internationally-acclaimed director Carlo Ortega Cuevas, who won the Best Director in Foreign Language for the film Walang Take Two at the Internaitonal Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema in London and the Best Newcomer Filmmaker of the Year at the World Film Awards in Jakarta, Indonesia. Cuevas' last film, Guerrero, recently won Best Feature Comedy Film at the Amsterdam International Film Festival 2018 and Best Editing in a Foreign Language Film at the Madrid International Film Festival 2018.

"The ultimate reason why we, EBC films, are making movies is to promote values. And I believe that promoting values doesn't have to be boring. So, we are trying our best to educate and inspire the audience without sacrificing entertainment value," said Cuevas.

Onboard with Cuevas as cinematographer is Giancarlo Escamillas who was declared Best Cinematographer in a Foreign Language Film at the Madrid International Film Festival 2017. The musical arrangement was done by Abednego Alfonso and Amiel Tuazon.

"Filipinos love to sing and dance. It provides us the quick escape from life's daily challenges. Hapi ang Buhay the Musical will not only make you laugh and sing but will also instill values through a satire of Filpino life," Robert Capistrano of EBC Films said.

Hapi ang Buhay the Musical is the second offering of EBC Films in its mission to produce inspirational, values-based films.

PETA Launches Stage of the Nation Campaign

Quezon City, Philippines - After celebrating its golden anniversary and the milestone of receiving a Magsaysay Award in 2017, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) welcomes its 51st Theater season with another breakthrough.

From September 2018-June 2019, PETA devotes all aspects of its artistic and teaching practice to "Stage of the Nation", a creative campaign that hopes to utilize the arts and engage artists to contribute to the discourses that concern our nation.

PETA has always harnessed the power of the arts to capture the imagination, shape opinion and provoke feelings that could transform and affect change. "The arts, especially theater, can tell stories, make us understand history and our past. It can communicate and educate, bring people together, inspire and heal," shares PETA executive director, Beng Cabangon in an interview.

Given the political, economic, and social challenges that have divided the country, PETA has dedicated all its performances, programs, activities and workshops to break barriers between creed, colors, labels and stereotypes, and to move audiences to reflect, think, speak.

PETA artistic director, Maribel Legarda, known for creating plays like "Rak of Aegis" which are not only wildly entertaining but also thought provoking, believes that art can be a platform for meaningful conversations and discussions. "That is why, all our shows this year will be followed by debriefings. Some of them have also been designed to be coupled with workshops that can happen in the schools and communities," she says.

PETA's 51st theater season line-up is composed of three returning shows and one new musical that aims to tackle pressing social and political issues in typical PETA fashion. "A lot of the chosen productions will talk about the themes of truth, historical revisionism, human rights and EJK, martial law, the elections and people's participation," says Legarda.

From September 28 to October 7, PETA brings back "Ang Buhay ni Galileo" which serves as a clear and powerful interrogation of truth and power, followed by a short run and a mobile tour of "A Game of Trolls" in October, a musical piece for millennials about fake news, Martial Law, and EJK. By November, PETA presents another installment of the PETA Laboratory featuring new and original works devised by its members. It also welcomes the return of its enchanting musical for young audiences "Tagu-taguan Nasaan ang Buwan?" a play that illustrates how storytelling can enrich a child's understanding of the world. In the early half of 2019, PETA premieres a new production "Charot", a political satire about the future of our country under a new chapter.

PETA will also host special performances and events like Jon Santos' political spoof "Trumperte", Dulaang UP's Kundiman Party, Third World Theater's "Manila Improv Festival 2019", the 5th year anniversary show of Words Anonymous, the popular spoken word group, and a "Human Rights Film Festival" in March, which will surely liven up the conversations with the audiences even more.

Also part of the line-up is the reunion concert and and album launch of the band Buklod, composed of members Noel Cabangon, Rom Donngeto, and Rene Boncocan, who were known in the 80's for songs like "Tatsulok", "Kanlungan", "Pagbabagong Nagbabago", songs which were inspired by the lives, struggles, and aspirations of Filipinos.

THEATER REVIEW: LUNGS OF SANDBOX COLLECTIVE

REVIEW BY ROBERT ENCILA CELDRAN PHOTOS FROM SANDBOX COLLECTIVE There’s a humble and crafty little play that packs a heavy punch, the likes of which typically escape public notice. It involves two actors and a script that cuts away all manner of artifice to reveal nothing but unbridled theatrical wonder.

The cast is identified only as M and W, an urban couple in their 30s with a refined worldliness ascribed to the progressive yuppie class. He’s a musician and she’s a doctoral student. We like to assume they’re secular humanists, shop organic and drink Fair Trade coffee. They eschew single-plastic use, and if they’re not vegan they probably spend the extra cash for kosher turkey and grass-fed beef. They discuss their feelings with resolute honesty, a practice that hedges between virtue and neurosis.

And don’t get her started on climate change and environmental decline or you’re in for a dissertation on planetary doom and human culpability.

At the onset, they appear to be the sort of company you might pass up on dinner with. She’s loquacious to a fault and he’s insufferably henpecked. But we know this about good playwriting: it’s an expository conceit certain to beguile us for a reason, because rest assured there’s sufficient redemption that lets us fall in love with the couple before long.

“Lungs” is Duncan MacMillan’s 90-minute two-hander about a young couple grappling with the existential crisis of first-world proportions. It’s a fine collaborative experiment between The Sandbox Collective and 9 Works Theatrical.

Central to the play’s thesis is the imposing challenge of whether or not to have a child in a world that’s looking bleaker by the day. Actually, it’s a dilemma that proves more ubiquitous than not--but W being an obsessive-compulsive logician, we can see why it’s prudent to think child-rearing through, what with aggressive climate change and economic anxiety the only possible inheritance this generation is poised to leave behind.

So here are two earnest individuals who genuinely love each other and whose simple endgame is to be “good people” in spite of their aggravating inclination to overthink every issue under the sun.

It’s a bare stage, mind you. Not a single prop, a costume change, or a blackout to suggest any scene transition, save for occasional specials that crossfade for locale emphasis.

MacMillan’s unorthodox style is either an actor’s dream or nightmare. Multiple scenes span across several years — transporting the couple from a random IKEA checkout stand to their car, which takes them home and into the living room where they talk anxiously about having a baby and other pressing items, then perhaps out again to let off steam and dance in a local bar. It goes on—from a hospital delivery room to his workplace and to their unexpected run-in at the residence of another woman of interest (after M is forced to leave W due to irreconcilable issues); and finally to discover them reunited, back on their bed (the floor) slathered in post-coital bliss.

All this is achieved in a small imaginary space and with absolutely no pantomime allowed.

Yet somehow we follow along with no internal questions asked. It’s reminiscent of those improvised open scenes in acting class designed to convey intention and navigate conflict. The scenes are ultimately about problem solving and character arc.

It’s a mercurial device, and McMillan's attendant lesson is a sobering revelation: stripping these actors of the usual stagecraft elements compels them to abandon pretenses so that they’re made to confront the truth as their only viable and urgent choice.

Which brings us to the emotional eloquence of two sensible actors that lend fierce adherence to the text and an ardent commitment to one another: Sab Jose and Jake Cuenca.

Fresh out of the musical theatre gate as Michelle in the recently concluded “ETO NA! Musikal n’APO,” (also by 9 works Theatrical), Sab Jose glides into a difficult role with versatile aplomb. She talks incessantly and drives a majority of the dialogue as she is obviously charged with the task of identifying today's most relevant problems, both personal and global. Her pacing is urgent but we trust her to slow down long enough to absorb the changing moods, especially as it involves her partner’s input. Her changed demeanor in the latter part of the play, as W reaches out to reconcile with M, is poignant. It reflects the transformation that results from a life-changing tragedy (I wouldn't dare spoil the story with that detail).

Jake Cuenca is a refreshing new discovery on stage. A film and television star, he wears the confidence of a seasoned thespian and a vulnerable quality that he seems to have tapped to flesh out his character’s inner strength. As M, he already looks quite masculine, but we're drawn even closer to the sensitive man who actively listens and fights for his beloved.

No doubt Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan (director) and Caisa Borromeo (assistant director) had something to do with the satisfying synthesis of these complex characters. They have shaped a believable relationship between people whose future we actually care about.

The small arena space at Power MAC Spotlight Center lends itself ideally to McMillan's minimalist construct. It also brings its own problems as actors are required to wield the attention of an audience seated around the raised, square stage.

The obstacle in question has less to do with when to shift blocking positions and more to do with why they must shift. Composition involving two people is a function of who gets the upper hand at any given moment. I would challenge the directors to revisit, clarify, and perhaps tweak those positions to determine how the constant shift in power is reflected by the geometry of the staging--e.g., who is up or down, who is facing what direction, who is behind whom, and why. You can never fully satisfy everybody in the round, anyway, so the line of focus should always come first.

All in all, the eager crowd on preview night was given a brutal dose of honest moral inventory, courtesy of two exceedingly generous actors who owned the space and seized our interest. In this sprawling metropolis where live entertainment is dominated by spectacle and pageantry, it's rewarding to get a reprieve and meditate on the intimate lessons of a small show with a big heart.

Clique V at Belladonnas. Todo Support sa 1st Anniversary ng 3:16 Events and Talent Management Co.

Ang rising boyband na Clique V na kinabibilangan nina Clay Kong, Marco Gomez, Sean de Guzman, Karl Aquino, Rocky Rivero, Kaizer Banzon, Blaize Nicolas, Calvin Almojera, at Gabby Villamor, ay nagkaroon ng first major concert last Feb. 27 sa Music Museum. Wala pang isang taon under their management and discover, ang 3:16 Events and Talent Management Co. na headed by Len Carillo, ay naging bahagi naman sila ng PMPC Star Awards for Music 2017-2018 na ginanap more than week ago. Nominated sila para sa categories na Dance Album of the Year at Duo/Group Artist of the Year bukod sa pagiging guest performers sa nasabing event.

According to the composer, Jesse Lucas, inspiration came easily to him after reading “Voice from the Underworld.” He wrote: "The poems of Maningning Miclat are almost melodious that I can hear the music through the poetic images.

It spoke and at the same time sang to me poignant thoughts about life, pain and love…. the experience in writing the music was really meditative and cathartic at the same time. It feels like I have discovered a new language, a language that
speaks directly to the soul. These are the foundation of Ginugunita Kita’s music.”

Directed by film and theater actor Roeder Camaňag, the performance will feature soloist Banaue Miclat-Janssen and master cellist Renato Lucas, together with singer Al Gatmaitan and Angela Castro of the FEU Dance Company, with live interactive visual art of Nasser Lubay.

“GINUGUNITA KITA,” the performance art, says the director, Roeder Camaňag, “is all about poetry and the creation of emotive response. From the poetry of the life of a poet to the poetry of interpreting the poems of someone you
love and the poetry of putting the right music to amplify the auditory experience of powerful images embedded in a poem.”

Misters of Filipinas 2018 Official Candidates Presented to the Media

The official candidates of Misters of Filipinas 2018 were formally presented to the members of the media last September 17 at the Plaza of Resorts World Manila in Pasay City.

After months of online screening, casting calls and regional competitions from various franchises in the Philippines and among Filipino communities abroad, Prime Event Productions Philippines Foundation Inc. (PEPPS) formally introduced the 23 official candidates of Misters of Filipinas 2017.

"It was a long search for the official candidates, but I am confident that we have a good batch this year," said PEPPS president Carlo Morris Galang.

The candidates came from all over the country in hopes of winning one of the coveted titles of the competition and becoming the next Neil Perez (Mister International 2014), Kara Singhdole (Man of the Year 2016), and Ion Perez.

The competitors are very happy that they made it to the official list of candidates. These men came from various backgrounds such as being a fitness trainer, model, and even a college professor. They will now set off on their journey for the titles that will have the winners competing in various international competitions.

Misters of Filipinas: Stronger at 6
This year's Misters of Filipinas is PEPPS 6th edition, and this year's batch proves that the pageant is going stronger.

"I wouldn't say that the entire 6 years were smooth," mentions Galang. "Like any organization, we are constantly evolving and facing challenges. But I thank God for my team because we have faced obstacles and survived if not came out victorious."

Galang pertained to different challenges that the organization faced in the 6 years since its inception. These challenges saw conflicts -- with names, previous organization members, and even the challenge of emerging victorious in PEPPS' initial advocacy of uplifting the male pageantry system in the Philippines.

Despite odds, PEPPS emerged victorious and overcame the stumbles it faced.

Galang further addressed some recent developments in the organization, some of which entailed the breakdown of a partnership, the issue on resigned Mister Universe Tourism 2018 Ion Perez, and even the change of venue of the finals for Misters of Filipinas 2018.

An iconic venue

Misters of Filipinas 2018 will have its finals on October 3 at the iconic Music Museum in San Juan City.

"People have been asking why we chose Music Museum as the finals venue," said Galang. "Actually, we want a lot of things to be different this year. We want the competition to be more intimate with our audience. Music Museum offers just that."

"Add the fact that Music Museum is celebrating their 30th year this 2018. We want to pay tribute to their contribution to the music industry in the Philippines the same way Misters of Filipinas contributed to the uplifting of male pageantry in the country," Galang further says.

The Road Leading to the Finals

The 6th Misters of Filipinas promises that the candidates will really have something worth enjoying and remembering. In a short amount of time, the candidates will be exposed to various activities that will develop skills in them.

Last September 16, the official candidates had a photoshoot for both swimwear and formal wear. They also had a series of workshops with the best in the industry such as David's Salon (for grooming), and Lyn Bentsen (for personality development). They even had runway walk coaching with the president of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines Raphael Kiefer.

The candidates will also fly to Davao which will host the pre-pageant competitions before flying back to Manila for the finals.

Misters of Filipinas is produced by Prime Events Productions Philippines Foundation Inc. along with its sponsors such as TPC Events Concept and Design, David's Salon, Resorts World Manila, Highland Bali Villas Resorts and Spa, and many more.

#YATO (You Are The One)
is one of the singer-songwriter's 200 songs which caught the attention of Viva Records. The actor, who's currently single. dedicates the song to his ex-girlfriend. When he's not doing acting stints in independent movies or playing Jesus Christ in Martir sa Golgota, Lance Raymundo is dabbling in his greatest passion which is music.

"I'm just happy to be alive and I'm thankful to God that I'm alive," he said regarding his accident 4 years ago in a gym which left his face crushed, prompting him to go through reconstructive surgery. "Kinilala niya ako bilang tao. And from gathering info about me, this is how he put together the material needed for the video." Joel's actually the one who suggested he incorporate this challenging part of Lance's life into the video. One of the highlights is when his leading lady in the video, Janna Victoria, cries after seeing his face though what happened to his face was not shown. "Our characters love each other for what we are, hindi sa panglabas," stressed Lance.

The official start of Lance Raymundo's career as a musician was in 2000, when he released his self-titled album with then tracks, six of which he wrote and the rest he assisted in the creation process. "Ito yung totoo kong sound ever since. And now, I'm more comfortable with my career, with myself, that I don't need to pretend to be something I'm not. I don't need to go along with the trend," he said with confidence regarding his re-released ballad.

A colorful cast of characters come to life in RTYA's Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairytale

Rediscover a beloved fairytale as REP's Theater for Young Audiences brings you the story of Princess Rapunzel like you've never seen it before in Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale from September 15, 2018 to January 27, 2019 at the OnStage Theater, Greenbelt 1, Makati City.

Twists and turns abound in this musical retelling of the childhood classic, including delightful new characters with their own mysterious stories, intersecting at just the right comical---and heartwarming---moments. Joy Virata directs the colorful cast in this magical world, including an evil would-be queen, a handsome prince, a determined hairstylist, a lovable dragon, and the princess with a famous head of hair.

The story first introduces you to the beautiful, extremely long-haired Princess Rapunzel (Cara Barredo, Mikkie Bradshaw, Justine Narciso, Alyssa Rosa, and Ani Pearl Aquino) as she's kidnapped and trapped inside a tower by the evil lady Za Za (Carla Guevara-Laforteza and Christine Flores) in an attempt to take over the throne.

Meanwhile, Sir Roderick (Hans Eckstein and Andres Borromeo) and his friend Edgar (Steven Hotchkiss, Chino Veguillas, and Kenny Isidoro), who chose beauty school instead of knight training, are on a quest to find the perfect head of hair when they stumble upon the tower. Together with a strange Gypsy Woman (Bituin Escalante and Naths Everett) looking for a powerful piece of jewelry that was stolen from her, and witty, old dragon Socrates (Arnel Carrion, Raymund Concepcion, and Jamie Wilson), they band together to try to rescue Rapunzel and defeat the scheming Za Za.

Based on the story, music, and lyrics by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, this is one unexpected adventure you definitely shouldn't miss!
