What I Learned in Rainbow's Sunset, an Official MMFF 2018 Entry

Love transcends race, socioeconomic status and age.

However, real gender exploration (hindi lang yung magkoconclude ka na bakla ka kaagad) is for the upper middle class and beyond. Ramoncito Estrella (is a former senator living in a mansion that spans acres of land while Fredo (Tony Mabesa) is a cancer-stricken former teacher who came from a well-to-do family but chose to live simply.

Imagine if Ramon was a taxi driver and Fredo was a street sweeper. Yes, they could possibly fall for each other but the plot of the movie would not happen since both would either be busy working hand to mouth or would be retirees but taking care of the children in their extended family, since they definitely wouldn't be able to afford yayas or have a horde of servants in the Estrella mansion.

As for Sylvia (Gloria Romero), aside from being totally in love with Ramon, the obvious reason she did not fight Fredo and just decided to just share the man she loves between them is because as someone from the upper class, like the usual upper class, a scandal would mean prying eyes. Had she been from the slums of Tondo, Fredo and Ramon would have been facing Raffy Tulfo time the moment they were discovered.

Aiko Melendez can be a great comedienne

Let's face it, she's been given romantic comedy roles when she was young like the usual pretty lass and handed out mother roles in dramatic films or TV shows. However, she should be given credit to have that pulse when it comes to comedy. Based on the trailer, I didn't expect that the other main conflict of the film, aside from Ramon's decision to cohabit with the dying Fredo in his octogenarian years, the squabble between Fredo's children Emman (Tirso Cruz III), Georgina (Aiko Melendez), and Fe (Sunshine Dizon), could actually be attacked in a manner bordering on camp. Sure, there is still the touch of melodrama which veteran director Joel Lamangan is known for but most of the time you just can't help but suppress giggles.

A love that is all-encompassing means you love what the love of your life loves, even if it is another person

We are not strangers to love. One of the hardest persons to love is a cult leader. His people love him so much to the point of obsession and you being so close would be subject to to scrutiny, always. Gossips would fester and most likely a normal person would end up leaving in tears. You would always have to adust because that is his world. But, what if his world is another person?

See, the song that would perfectly paint the Rainbow's Sunset scenario is Hati na Lang Tayo sa Kanya sung by Eumee and JC Santos because ultimately, the real rainbow of this story is Sylvia, whose pot of gold lies in just loving indefinitely. Gloria Romero's portrayal of this character might net her the MMFF 2018 Best Actress Awards.

Why should you watch this? So you can see what a love which defies conventions truly is.

Aside from the abovementioned cast members, Jim Pebanco, Sue Prado, Ross Pesigan, Marcus Madrigal, and Tanya Gomez play major support roles in tje fipm.
