Famas Launches First-ever Short Film Festival, Championing Filipino Filmmakers

The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) proudly announces the first-ever FAMAS Short Film Festival, a groundbreaking event dedicated exclusively to showcasing short films. Set to take place in 2025, this historic festival, powered by REMS Entertainment, aims to provide a prestigious platform for Filipino filmmakers to share their creative visions and impactful stories.

With a strong emphasis on diversity, innovation, and storytelling, the festival welcomes entries in multiple categories, including Short Film, Student Film, Regional Film, Advocacy Film, and Documentary. This initiative underscores FAMAS' commitment to championing the next generation of Filipino filmmakers and celebrating the richness of Philippine cinema through the power of short-form storytelling

"The FAMAS Short Film Festival is a testament to our dedication to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers and providing them with a platform to shine," said

FAMAS President Francia Conrado. "We are excited to see the creative works of our talented filmmakers take center stage."

Direk Gabby Ramos, CEO of REMS Entertainment and the Festival Director of

FAMAS Short Film Festival, added, "This festival is not just a competition-it is a celebration of storytelling, creativity, and the boundless potential of Filipino filmmakers. We look forward to bringing these powerful stories to a wider audience."

The submission period will run from January 24 to March 25, 2025, with selected films set to be screened from May 3 to May 9, 2025. The festival will culminate in an Awards Night on May 10, 2025, where outstanding films and filmmakers will be honored with prestigious FAMAS trophies.

The FAMAS Short Film Festival 2025 is a groundbreaking event dedicated solely to short films, presented by REMS Entertainment, owned by filmmaker Gabby Ramos.

"This inaugural festival aims to celebrate Filipino filmmakers' creativity and storytelling, offering a distinguished platform for short-form films," remarks Ms. Francia Conrado, President of FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences).

Director Gabby, the festival director of the 1st FAMAS Short Film Festival 2025, beams with honor and excitement for his new endeavor, himself a past winner of Best Short Film in FAMAS 2024 for "Huling Sayaw Ni Erlinda".

Direk Gabby encourages diversity and innovation, inviting "finished short film entries" in various categories that highlight compelling narratives, artistic expression, and socially relevant themes.

"Ma'am Francia always dreams of awarding short films, just like what they do in the main event of FAMAS over decades.

"Like her, I personally believe that short filmmakers will be the next generation of filmmakers of Philippine Cinema.

"Likewise, that is also our vision in Rems Entertainment, especially after we opened our VS Cinema in Quezon City.

"That's the reason why we proposed to produce this event," says Direk Gabby.

Submission of entries is currently ongoing, with March 25, 2025 as the deadline.

After the cinema screenings from May 5 to 9, the exciting Awards Night will take place on May 10.

Veteran actress Janice de Belen will receive the Ading Fernando Lifetime Achievement Award for her remarkable contributions to Philippine television and film, spanning decades since her career began in the 1980s via the soap opera "Flordeluna," making her the original Teleserye Queen. Meanwhile, respected broadcaster Julius Babao will be honored with the Excellence in Broadcasting Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his decades-long commitment to journalism and public service. He has worked with major TV networks such as TV5 and ABS-CBN. To date, his YouTube channel "Julius Babao Unplugged" has more than 1 million subscribers. Adding to the event’s major milestones, the documentary program i-Witness will be inducted into the Star Awards Hall of Fame, having secured 15 wins in the Best Documentary Program category. It joins the ranks of legendary TV programs such as Eat Bulaga! (Best Variety Show), Maalaala Mo Kaya (Best Drama Anthology), Bubble Gang (Best Gag Show), and ASAP (Best Musical Variety Show), as well as renowned host Boy Abunda (Best Male Showbiz-Oriented Show Host). With the rise of digital television, 14 networks will compete for the prestigious Best TV Station award, a category that was once dominated by only two major networks. Fans and followers of the popular tandems KimPau (Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino) and BarDa (Barbie Forteza and David Licauco) will be overjoyed and filled with "kilig" as their beloved love teams are honored with the German Moreno Power Tandem Award. The Star Awards for Television is one of PMPC’s three annual award-giving events, alongside the Star Awards for Movies and Star Awards for Music. The selection process, which covered TV programs aired from January to December 2024, was overseen by PMPC President Mell Navarro and Overall Chairman Rodel Fernando. The winners will be revealed at the upcoming 38th Star Awards for Television ceremony, a highly anticipated event that will celebrate the brightest stars and most outstanding programs in Philippine television. PETA Control + Shift: Changing Narratives Festival 2025 as A Brave Exploration of Narrative Change

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – PETA kicks off the year with another exciting line-up of fresh and bold works with Control + Shift: Changing Narratives Festival, which brings new reimaginings of Filipino stories to the theater stage.

J-mee Katanyag, festival director and newly appointed company artistic director, has curated a collection of provocative original works that highlight the exploration of diverse performative and theater forms, including puppetry, movement, interactivity, and digital theater. These elements come together to reimagine traditional Filipino folklore, values, and contemporary issues, crafting narratives that traverse the past, engage with the present, and envision futures.

The festival's centerpiece is a remounting of Melvin Lee's critically acclaimed trilogy Kumprontasyon, as well as new and experimental works, improv performances, live music jams, and more, which will take place from February 6-23, 2025, at the PETA Theater Center in New Manila, Quezon City.

The following events and shows are open to the public:

Main Theater Performances

“Kumprontasyon”

February 6-9, PETA-Phinma Theater

Described by critics as a “theatrical masterpiece,” Kumprontasyon explores unresolved historical and political events in three one-act plays: Allan Palileo’s Lakambini featuring Teroy Guzman and Sherry Lara, Guelan Luarca’s The Impossible Dream featuring Romnick Sarmenta and Ron Capinding, and Joshua Lim So’s A Color for Tomorrow featuring Missy Maramara, Adrienne Vergara, Gillian Vicencio, and Uzziel Delamide.

“Twin Bill”

February 14-15, PETA-Phinma Theater

Twin Bill features two revisited plays from Control + Shift 2024: Dominique La Victoria’s Kislap at Fuego, an enchanted love story set during the Philippine revolution, and Mixkaela Villalon’s Children of the Algo, which navigates the digital age and the ills of a technology-obsessed generation.

“Control + Shift + SPIT: An Improvised Show”

Feb 16, 2025 – 8:00 PM, PETA-Phinma Theater

This one-night-only show features The Silly People’s Improv Theater (SPIT), Manila’s most sought-after improv group. SPIT borrows the set of PETA's Control + Shift 2025 Festival for a night of spontaneous hilarity and fun!

Studio Theater Performances

PETA’s Studio Theater lineup features eight new works, running from February 7-16, 2025.

  • Studio Theater Set A | Unboxing - Felinda V. Bagas’ The Little Girl in a Box takes audiences on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. A story about a little girl and her search for her true home.
