PETA’s ‘Rak of Aegis’ Season 7, a tribute to OPM

The iconic, Filipino musical phenomenon, Philippine Educational Theater Association’s Rak of Aegis makes a much-awaited return from July-September 2019 at the PETA Theater Center in partnership with Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) and The PhilPop MusicFest Foundation (Philpop).

Since the show opened in 2014, Rak of Aegis has taken Manila, figuratively and literally, by storm! The original Pinoy musical brought one of the greatest OPM icons, The Aegis Band, to the spotlight by featuring their powerful hits and karaoke favorites “Halik,” “Sinta,” “Basang Basa sa Ulan,” and more.

Rak of Aegis was also one of the first Filipino productions which ushered in the trend of jukebox musicals, giving birth to a newfound appreciation for theater and original Pinoy music that crosses all boundaries of social class and age. Today, Rak of Aegis is the longest-running original Pinoy musical in contemporary Philippine theater.

This 2019, Rak of Aegis Season 7 is befittingly partnered with OPM and PhilPop “to celebrate and pay tribute to Philippine music, performances, and artistry”, according to PETA Executive Director Beng Cabangon. “Pinoy music speaks of our culture and identity as Filipinos. It encapsulates our dreams and continues to inspire us to love and hope,” she says.

“In partnering with OPM and Philpop, we wish not only to recognize our wealth of Filipino songs and talents, but also impart to the audience how music, theater, the arts can evoke our highest aspirations and bring out the best in our humanity.” The collaboration between PETA, OPM, and PhilPop brings in a new and exciting season for Rak of Aegis, as it now becomes a coming together of music and theater lovers, and avid fans of various OPM artists.

OPM President Ogie Alcasid, upon watching the show during its first season, stressed the importance of supporting music that’s sariling atin: “A show like Rak of Aegis is an embodiment of what we have to do as Filipinos – suportahan, tangkilikin at ipagbunyi po natin ang ating sariling musika!”

While Rak of Aegis remains to be a wildly entertaining and heartwarming piece of theater, six runs and 300+ shows later, Season 7 now brings something new to the table. New cast members including OPM artists will breathe life into the well-loved characters of the show. “We’ll have busking in the PETA lobby and have some OPM artists join in the play,” director Maribel Legarda also reveals.

On top of that, she and Rak of Aegis musical director Myke Salomon will also enjoin the PhilPop Songwriting Boot Camp 2109 to share their expertise creating original musical theater productions with Rak of Aegis as a case study.

So whether you’re watching for the first time, or watching again, Rak of Aegis will be another fresh experience and celebration for the Filipino. Its massive following proves that this timely tale of hope, resilience, and distinctly Filipino music tugs at the hearts of Pinoy audiences like no other. “The music and performances will always be something to look forward to,” director Maribel Legarda says. “When it’s there, you really learn to enjoy the humor and the heart and the music of it all.”

The stellar cast for Rak of Aegis Season 7 is a mix of mostly original cast members: Aicelle Santos and Kim Molina as Aileen; Isay Alvarez-Seña and Sweet Plantado-Tiongson as Mary Jane; Robert Seña and Renz Verano as Kiel; Kakai Bautista and Neomi Gonzales as Mercy, Jerald Napoles, Pepe Herrera and Joshua Bulot as Tolits; Myke Salomon, Poppert Bernadas and Vince Lim as Kenny; Ron Alfonso and Jimi Marquez as Jewel; Gie Onida as Fernan; Gimbey Dela Cruz, Abi Sulit, Gab Pangilinan, Gold Villar-Lim, Teetin Villanueva, John Moran, Gio Gahol, Paeng Sudayan, Roi Calilong and Carlon Matobato as ensemble. Joining them are last season’s new cast additions: Shaira Opsimar as Aileen, Rody Vera as Fernan and Matel Patayon as part of the ensemble.

PETA will also soon reveal the new OPM cast members which will for sure add another layer of excitement to the ever-growing Barangay Venezia. FILM REVIEW: BETWEEN MAYBES

Maybe is already a place betwee0n a yes and a no. If you are between maybes, yes, you are trudging an uncertain future, and no, time you lost cannot be returned. However, letting yourself lose control may be the way to get back your sanity and see a clearer perspective, with or without labels.

In Between Maybes, a new film by Black Sheep, Hazel (Julia Barretto), one of the protagonists, is not sure anymore that being an actress is making her happy and her differences with her mom lead her to backpack and take a sudden trip to the Saga prefecture located on the island of Kyushu. There, she meets Louie (Gerald Anderson) who grew up in that place and seems to be estranged from his parents.

Even though the trailer might make you think that the movie is about age gap and how it causes problems for potential partners regardless whether they meet in a workplace or on vacation, you're totally wrong.

The strength of the film lies in the character development of both parties. Hazel starts off as an entitled millennial, which is to be expected given the fact that she's an actress with a stage mom and dad. Louie, accustomed to the Japanese culture, is polite and quite formal. Though they seem to be the opposite of each other, what starts out as Hazel's homesickness leading her to convince a fellow Pinoy Louie to check up on her every now and then, eventually evolves into a romantic relationship which proves that familiarity breeds contempt.

Julia played Hazel with spunk and her character modeled after the typical not so intelligent celebrity feels natural, like getting lost easily or trusting a stranger just because he's Pinoy. Gerald showed that he can definitely pull off mature roles as Louie, who has to deal with a girl who broke his cycle of quiet and contemplation working in a fishery.

Yayo Aguila stood out as the ambitious mom who only pushes her child because she doesn't want Hazel to experience her childhood. Her lines during the webcam scene as well as her performance are just gold. The Japanese talents are okay but the one who played Louie's employer has one scene where she seems to have a bit of a temper but I don't think it was needed in the scene. Saga being the setting made sense because the movie also utilized the making of ceramics as a metaphor on how we are molded by our upbringing and surroundings.

Jason Paul Laxamana brings his A-game as a writer-director and even though his romantic comedies sometimes tend to have more punchlines than needed, the script here is very balanced and the buildup is good, especially the nifty little details which foreshadow Hazel and Louie's past they were unconsciously not trying to deal with and how it leads to the ending which is just logical. This is definitely the best romantic comedy film he has made.

Sa pinakabagong pelikula ng Black Sheep na Between Maybes, gusting maihatid ni Direk Jason Paul Laxamana ang isang kwento ng dalawang tao na nahanap ang katahimikan na hinahanap nila sa di inaasahang lugar: sa piling ng isa’t isa.

Sa unang pagkakataon, pinagtambal sina Gerald Anderson at Julia Barretto sa isang pelikula na kinunan on location sa Saga, Japan. Pagkatapos ng unang project niya sa Black Sheep na To Love Some Buddy, gustong ihatid ni Jason Paul Laxamana ang isang kwento na sasalamin sa katahimikan at kalmang mahahanap sa lugar kung saan aandar ang kwento.

Sa Between Maybes, gaganap si Julia Barretto bilang Hazel, isang aktres na nakaka-experience ng konting problema sa kanyang career. Pakiramdam niya’y wala na siyang kontrol
sa kanyang buhay. Sa kagustuhan niyang makatakas at makabitaw sa kanyang buhay dito sa Maynila ay kumuha siya ng flight papunta sa ibang bansa at nauwi sa prefecture ng Saga sa Japan. Doon, makikilala niya si Louie (Gerald Anderson) na tatayong gabay niya sa oras ng kanyang pangangailangan. Matapos masaktan dahil sa kinahinatnan ng kanyang pamilya, naging mapang-isa si Louie at pinili na lamang mamuhay ng tahimik sa Saga.

Mamumuo ang isang “functional relationship” sa pagitan ng dalawa. Dahil mag-isa sa isang lugar na di niya alam, makikisuyo si Hazel kay Louie na i-check siya paminsan-minsan. Sa ingay at tuwa na dala ni Hazel mahahanap ni Louie ang break mula sa kanyang pag-iisa. Sa gitna ng katahimikan ng Japan mahahanap nina Louie at Hazel ang comfort sa isa’t isa, siyang bagay na kailangan nila sa punto ng buhay nila ngayon. Pero alam naman ng isa’t isa kung
gaano kalayo ang mundo nila at kailangan na lang nila maniwala na may mga bagay na espesyal dahil na rin hindi ito nagtatagal.

Pumasok sina Gerald at Julia sa proyekto nang may paniniwala sa mga karakter na gagampanan nila. Pareho rin nilang nakita na may pagkakapareho ang kanilang roles sa totong buhay. Minsan na ding tumakas si Julia sa South America para pagnilayan ang kanyang buhay at para makahanap ng katahimikan. Si Gerald naman ay nahahanap ang katahimikan bilang isang paraan para makatakas sa buhay, kahit saglit lang.

Sumailalim ang dalawa sa workshop kasama si Direk Jason Paul upang makilala pa nang lubos ang kanilang mga karakter at kinunan nila ang pelikula sa gitna ng Sakura season sa Japan. Kahit tahimik sa Saga at kaunti lamang ang nakatira, nakatulong ang lugar para magkaroon ng kakaibang layer ang kwento nina Hazel at Louie. Isang bagong bersyon ng kanta ni Rico Blacno na Your Universe ang ginawa para sa pelikula na ni-record ni Acel, ang dating bokalista ng Moonstar88.

Hinahandog ng Black Sheep at ni Direk Jason Paul Laxamana ang isang pelikula para sa mga gustong tumakas at makaramdam. Isang kwento tungkol sa mga pagkakataong lilipas lang pero hindi mo malilimutan. Catriona Gray, Pia Wurtzbach, and Many Celebrity Performers Amplify the HIV Advocacy

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, and Concert King Martin Nievera headline this year's Love Gala: Courage Amplify on May 11 at the ABS-CBN Vertis Tent in Quezon City. 

Wurtzbachwill launch a new advocacy campaign that promotes HIV treatment-as-prevention method. Graywill offer words of courage to commemorate all those who lost their lives to the virus in the 2019 International AIDS Candlelight Memorial ceremony. 

Meanwhile, Martin will serenade the occasion to show his support for the HIV/AIDS advocacy. Suklay Diva Katrina Velarde, Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 Grand Star Dreamer Laarni Lozada, World Champions of Performing Arts winner Rhap Salazar, The Voice Philippines Season 2 Finalist Leah Patricio, Jeffrey Hidalgo, Ana Ramsey, and more will also lend their voices for the cause. In addition, Zeus Collins of the Hashtags, Addlib Dance Company, and Hiraya Dance Company will gracefully extend their moves to support the advocacy. 

The 2nd Ripple Awards will also be conferred at the Love Gala. This award is given to individuals, organizations, and initiatives that have greatly contributed to the HIV/AIDS advocacy. Esteemed panel of judges from World Health Organization, UNAIDS and other international and local institutions rigorously screened the awardees. The awards will be presented by DJ Chacha, Kaladkaren Davila, Paolo Ballesteros, CK of the Hashtags, Vivoree Esclito, Iyah Mina, BJ Pascual, Phil Palmos, Samantha Mae Bernardo and Empress Schuck.

Binondo, A Tsinoy Musical Set to Rerun July 12-14, 2019

Maritess Alava - Yong Foundation proudly presents the restaging of Binondo, A Tsinoy Musical to be directed by Joel Lamangan, from the original story by Rebecca Chuaunsu and  written by Ricky Lee with Gershom Chua, Eljay Deldoc and music by Von de Guzman.

The times were changing. Political unrest enveloped the Philippines. The Cultural Revolution was in full swing in China. But in Manila's Chinatown during the 1971 Mid Autumn Festival and under one of the brightest moons ever recorded in history, Lily, a Filipina night club singer and Ah Tiong, a mainland Chinese scholar, meet at the birthday celebration of the Chinese Love Deity Ge Lao. Lily, a hopeless romantic and Ah Tiong, a cynic about love and destiny, embark on a journey of love that defies all expectations.

But Lily's local Chinese childhood friend Carlos who has long harbored hidden feelings for her will not make things easy for the star-crossed lovers as all three are forced to discover the different ways of giving and receiving love.

Spanning two decades and two countries, Binondo, A Tsinoy Musical explores how love prevails even in times of racial prejudice, political turmoil, absence and longing. This is a story of a deep and enduring love that transforms the lives of everyone who dares put their hearts on the line.

The Cast

Shiela Valderrama-Martinez shall reprise the role of Lily, a hopeless romantic; a Filipina who grew up in Chinatown. Unable to finish her college education, Lily is forced to work odd jobs, from a worker in a Chinese factory to a singer at the famous Lotus Club in Binondo. She faithfully visits Ge Lao's altar (The Chinese God of marriage and love) in the hope to find her one true love.

Arman Ferrer reprises the role of Ah Tiong, a Mainland Chinese scholar from Beijing University who has earned a PhD in the United States of America. Ah Tiong is pragmatic and does not believe in a great love or destiny and is convinced that love is a duty that must be fulfilled. He has long accepted that his parents have arranged his future marriage. Before returning to the us for his masters degree, Ah Tiong takes a side trip to the Philippines.

Noel Rayos lays the role of Carlos, a local Chinese man whose parents own the factory where Lily and her parents are employed. Carlos grows up with Lily and they become close friends. In college, he becomes an activist and brings Lily to protests and rallies. Carlos also helps Lily get into the Lotus Club, which is owned by a family friend.

THE KUNDIMAN PARTY returns to the Philippine stage at the PETA THEATER Center

Acclaimed as one the most meaningful and relevant original Filipino plays in recent times, Floy Quintos’ “THE KUNDIMAN PARTY” comes to the PETA THEATER CENTER for limited run starting May 24.

    The play, directed by Dexter M. Santos was first produced by the UP Playwright’s Theater in 2018.  It was hailed by critics and audiences alike for the seamless weaving of our timeless Kundiman art songs into a plot that involved discontented millennials and Social Media, EJKs and other current political and social  issues.

   Equally notable were the performances of the fine ensemble led by Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino as Maestra Adela, a reclusive voice teacher whose latent nationalism is awakened . Together with Frances Makil-Ignacio, Stella Cañete-Mendoza, Jenny Jamora and Missy Maramara as Adela’s close circle of Titas, the cast painted a portrait of contemporary Pinoy society that was both poignant as well as wildly entertaining.

      By the time the revival opens at the PETA Theater this year, a crucial national election will have taken place, an election that for many will determine the course of the current national struggle.

     Whatever the results of this political exercise, the creators of the show believe this: That the outcome of the elections will be the start of a greater struggle, the beginning  of a new chapter in the fight to regain our national dignity. Thus, “The Kundiman Party” and all that it stands for will be more relevant than ever.

     It seems most meaningful that “The Kundiman Party” is being  revived at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City. PETA has long served as a vital venue for meaningful and relevant original Filipino works. “The Kundiman Party” cast and creators are thankful to have been offered the chance to collaborate with this dynamic institution of Philippine Theater.  

Reprised Roles and Fresh Faces

“The Kundiman Party” at the PETA Theater Center will still scintillate with the presence of gifted actors reprising their roles:  Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino as Maestra Adela, Frances Makil-Ignacio as the feisty Tita Mayen, Stella Cañete-Mendoza as the nurturing Tita Helen and Jenny Jamora and Missy Maramara as the sexy, savvy Tita Mitch.  

    Also reprising their roles are Miah Canton as Antoinette, a young soprano earnestly searching for her voice, and  Soprano Rica Nepomuceno as Melissa, a professional Kundiman singer who desperately wants to be “relevant” again.

    But every party needs new guests to keep it swinging. “The Kundiman Party” is proud to welcome three new additions to the cast.

   Gabriel Paguirigan makes his acting debut as Ludwig, the Maestra’s accompanist and veritable sidekick . Gab has a formidable track record as a pianist, having bagged a first prize in the NAMCYA 2011  competition. It was a feat he was to repeat in 2015, this time as a Grand prize winner in the senior division. Just last year, together with his cousin, they won the First prize in Thailand’s Princess Galyani Vadhanna International Ensemble Competition, the first Filipinos ever to win in the prestigious royal competition.

    Boo Gabunada takes on the pivotal role of Bobby Valderama, a young activist who brings Maestra Adela  into the volatile world of Social Media. Boo has been on a roll recently, having starred as Cyrano in “Mula Sa Buwan” and  as Emman in “Ang Huling El Bimbo”. The role of Bobby will surely be an interesting star turn for this exciting young actor.

   Nonie Buencamino’s countless roles in Film, Television and Theater have established his reputation as one of our most seasoned actors. The role of Senator Juancho Valderama, Bobby’s estranged father, was originally created by Teroy Guzman. It will be interesting to see what Nonie will bring to the role and to the climactic scene where the Senator squares off with Maestra Adela, especially since it is a scene that involves his wife, Shamaine.

MUSICA FEUROPA CHORAL COMPETITION ON MAY 25 – 26

MUSICA FEUROPA, Far Eastern University’s annual choral competition and festival with the European Union in the Philippines as its principal partner, grows in size and stature every year.

The key criterion of MUSICA FEUROPA is that each choir has to perform two songs: one song of their choice written in an official European Union language, and one piece written in any Filipino Language.

From just four choirs in 2009 mostly from the City of Manila, the number rose to an all-time high of thirty one choirs hailing from all over the Philippines.

What used to be a competition for college choirs expanded to two categories: High School and Open including but not limited to university, church, company, government and other ensembles. Musica FEUROPA has become one of the
definitive choral competitions in the Philippines.

As Musica FEUROPA begins its second decade, some notable changes will be implemented to intensify the competition. The High School Category expands to a Teen Category to include youth between thirteen and nineteen years of age.
Like last year, the top three finalists of each category will compete for the title of Grand Champion.

Also, the tutti finale of the European Union Hymn will be sung in German.

Saunder Choi, an acclaimed Filipino composer was commissioned for a competition piece to be performed in the Grand Finals. The piece entitled “El Vasto Mar” will convey how music can serve as a universal language to promote
and sustain unity, peace and harmony among different nations. The text of the piece is lifted from Sampaguitas Y Poesia Varias, written by Pedro Paterno.

This year, ten (10) choirs from the Open Category and five (5) from the Teen Category will compete in MusicaFEUropa 11.

The winner will be determined by esteemed Filipino choral conductors and clinicians.

The semifinalists from the Teen Category will be adjudicated by Arwin Tan, Rodolfo Delarmente, and Maria Theresa Vizconde-Roldan, while Lester Delgado, Jude Roldan, and Emmanuel De Leon, Jr. will adjudicate the Open Category.
The Grand Champion will be decided by Prof. Fidel Calalang, Jr., Dr. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng, Dr. Ed Manguiat, Ma. Lourdes Hermo, and Ramon Lijauco, Jr.

The Grand Champion shall take home PhP100,000.00 and a trophy. The First Runner Up and Second Runner Up will receive PhP30,000.00 and PhP20,000 respectively, together with a trophy. A consolation prize of PhP10,000.00 will be
given to the remaining grand finalists.

Musica FEUROPA 11 will be on May 25 and 26, 2019 in the recently retrofitted Auditorium of Far Eastern University, Manila.
