"Sakuntala: Ang Singsing ng Kapalaran" is a Philippine adaptation by Allan Palileo of the classical Indian literature masterpiece "Shakuntala" which was originally written by Kalidasa. Under the direction of Prof. Joey Ting, it will be a musical added with some Filipino elements to relate the message of the play to Filipino audience of the new millenium. According to him, the building blocks of his directing ideas were derived from his lessons in Indian literature in their English subject in highschool. He was amazed of its romance that he got his heart attached to it and for a more unique exciting twist, he ended up fusing the story with Filipino flavor, with its setting taking place sometime in the distant future. In addition, it was a first in the history of Filipino theatrical runs to bring to life an Indian play with Filipino aesthetics integrated to it.
Is this ring of fate a mark of a new beginning? Indeed, "Sakuntala" is a must-see refreshing play, highly recommended especially for highschool students or theater students focused in Asian literature.
