FILM REVIEW: Book Club (2018)
What happens when you put a dash of inspiration from the 50 Shades of Grey the Musical Parody and focus on the book club members? Why, you get a film with the title Book Club, of course. And lots of "Titas of Manila" feels, even though the actresses involved are already between 65 to 80 years old.
Let's start with Diane Keaton, who not only plays one of the leads here, but is also a book author herself. Even though the plot is quite predictable, Diane and the other established actresses, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, all manage to sink their teeth in the roles they were given.
It is easy to at least enjoy the film if you would focus on the actresses' performances rather than the obvious photoshopped backgrounds and CGI. Think Sex and the City minus too much focus on designer items. Like the book of E.L. James the characters swear by, the men in the actual story all exist to serve the women. You have this one guy who waited for about half a century only to be rebuffed by his prideful conquest, and you have another man happily married for decades to his wife who always seem to plan everything and think of intimacy at inopportune moments.
For millenials, this might be something challenging to take in. But, for men and women in their midlife, there is much to laugh about.

Willie Nepomuceno, the King of Impressionism, and Nonoy Zuñiga, Pop Icon Headline “Music and Laughter” at the Theatre at Solaire this July
Live show aficionados will get a kick and a rush of nostalgia on July 27 8pm at the Theatre at Solaire when Grand Leisure Corporation brings Willie Nepomuceno and Nonoy Zuñiga together in “Music and Laughter.”
Two of the most formidable names in their respective fields of entertainment, the Man with the Many Faces and Voices Willie Nepomuceno and Pop icon and OPM hitmaker Nonoy Zuñiga have done shows together outside of the country but “Music and Laughter” marks the first time that Nepomuceno and Zuñiga will headline a concert together in Manila.
“Come to think of it, we've done shows together outside of Manila and we've crossed paths a number of times at the airport but with different destinations,” shares Nepomuceno who has performed before at the Eclipse Lounge also inside Solaire. “I am both excited and nervous about performing at the Theatre at Solaire.”
Zuñiga has done two previous shows at the Theatre at Solaire but with other artists. “This time I am excited to do a back-to-back show with ace impressionist, Willie Nep.”
Being the pioneer in the field of mimicry in the Philippines, Nepomuceno surprisingly finds Zuñiga, primarily a singer, “a natural humorist.” “His (Nonoy’s) songs are easily ‘singable’ that can appeal to all ages because the themes are universal. I particularly fancy his ‘I'll Never Ever Say Goodbye’ because everyone somehow passes through that sentimental episode in life, no matter how corny it may seem.”
Nepomuceno reminds us of a grand time when impressionists took their work seriously, painstakingly working on the characters they take on stage. “I really work hard at my craft, almost to perfection.”
In “Music and Laughter,” Nepomuceno showcases once more his unique brand of impressionism that has kept audiences packed in all his previous performances through a legendary career in entertainment. “My repertoire will consist of a blend of foreign celebrities and some local ones but this time, I'm veering away from the political satire which my audience has come to know me for---as a timely respite from the irritable summer heat of the season as well.”
Zuñiga welcomes the collaboration with Nepomuceno because he has always been a big fan of the latter. “Willie Nep is very professional in his ways and makes you feel at home performing with him. His impressions of Presidents Marcos, Ramos, and Erap (Estrada) are inimitable.”
Zuñiga is, hands down, one of the foremost Filipino balladeers of all time with a string of unforgettable hits, among them “Never Ever Say Goodbye,” “Kumusta Ka?” “Doon Lang,” “Love Without Time,” and “Fragments of Forever.” Never the kind to rest on his laurels, Zuñiga has just released his first digital single in support of VisPop or Visayan Pop; the song is called “Pero Atik Ra,” a duet with Jolianne Salvado.
As Willie Nepomuceno himself puts it, “Music and Laughter” is a show not to be missed because it will offer “pleasant entertainment and engaging humor.” Music and laughter are a magical combination that allows us to dream, think of the good times, and hope for better tomorrows.
This show is brought to you by Grand Leisure Corporation, tickets to “Music and Laughter” are available through Ticketworld or call 891-9999

Show Dogs Still Barking in Philippine Cinemas After a Week
"And they set off on this adventure to Vegas...and they enter the dog show in order to capture these animal traffickers. And so it's kind of like a...some people described it as a kind of a miscongeniality for dogs and I think there's probably a bit of something to that but I think it's kind of a fun way to have an action film, said Will Arnett regarding the plot of the family friendly film. The actor is known for his comedic works in hit films and TV programs such as Arrested Development, Monsters vs. Aliens, The Lego Movie, and Lego Batman. Arnett is a dog lover in real life that's why his work with Que (the Rottweiler who played Max) was something that he enjoyed immensely.
Max is voiced by actor and Grammy Award-winning rap artist Ludacris. According to producer Deepak Nayar, “We needed somebody who has New York tough accent, so Ludacris is the one we wanted to play the tough dog.”
To condition the dogs to perform, a typical day on set consists of activities such as “a game of ball and a nice walk”. Alexander continues, “The script is really full of dog action…especially for the Rottweiler. We’ve had several attacking scenes…we have him biting an arm, a leg, and that’s been challenging, but a lot of fun.”
Show Dogs features the voices of Shaquille O’Neal as Karma, Stanley Tucci (Devil Wears Prada) as Philippe, Alan Cumming as Dante, Gabriel Iglesias as Sprinkles, and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks as Daisy, the love interest of Max. It also stars Natasha Lyonne (American Pie) as Mattie, a dog groomer tasked with assisting Frank and Max to blend into a show dog world.
Viva International and MVP Entertainment brought the film to the Philippines. As of writing, the film is still shwoing in Robinsons Galleria Cinema 2.

FILM REVIEW AND MUSINGS: So Connected (REGAL FILMS)
What happens when a handsome and middle class boy who can't figure out that girls don't literally mean what they say gets his phone stolen and his heart broken? You get a friendly online neighborhood stalker who snoops on the girl who got the misfortune of buying a stolen phone because that's all she can afford. Thanks to the app called Storebox which Karter's sister downloaded on his phone and Pampanga's wifi ready restaurant which specializes in pancit luglug, he gets So Connected with Trisha. He gets obsessed with her life and fills his room with his picture, eventually coming up with the decision to go all the way to Angeles, Pampanga and start a friendship with her.
The film stars Jameson Blake as Karter and Janella Salvador as Trisha. The supporting cast are Krystal Brimner as Karter's sister, Ruby Rodriguez and Rolly Inocencio as the restaurant owners, and Cherise Castro as Karter's girlfriend.
Trisha, unlike Karter who sits on chair all day editing videos for their Youtube show Misyu, has to physically work hard as a waitress and spend time caring for her fling who gave her the cellphone. They eventually break up which gives Karter the opening that he needs to get into her life.
The premise of the movie of two strangers falling in love is fairly obvious but what gives it a nice twist is the fact that instead of rooting for Karter all the time, we do have this feeling of unease that we can't shake off because, after all, it is creepy to stalk someone online or offline. It reminds us that it is easy for us to feel close to someone or feel that we really know them based on us following their social media posts. Fantasy, like what Panti-Panti stands for, is easy to embrace, easy to talk to. But, when it becomes reality that responds to us in a way that we do not like, we tend to shy away from it.
In this age of social media where various sites and viral videos paint a picture of what a relationship should be, we forget that the biggest thrill lies in uncovering what is unique about each other little by little. This film is reminiscent of Ingrid Goes West where the titular character gets obsessed with an Instagram star and proceeds to find out what she likes and casually mentions them, artificially creating that feeling of a "soulmate connection", just like what happened when Karter was establishing his chemistry with Trisha.
The film makes us realize that if we are looking for something real, bonding and connecting in the real world is a must. Social media might be able to bridge worlds, but hearts get connected by looking in each others eyes and seeing if indeed, part of our soul is similar to what the other person holds within.
The film directed by Jason Paul Laxamana under Regal Films opened yesterday and is stillshowing in theater nationwide.

"Inday Will Always Love" You Airs Starting May 21
MEET THE CAST
Award-winningKapuso actress Barbie Forteza returns to primetime as Happylou Magtibay, a happy Manilenia, a store assistant and expert “lechonera” whose life makes a topsy-turvy turn when she makes a career move away from Manila in search for her father in Cebu. She spreads good vibes and kilig via GMA Network’s latest offering‘Inday Will Always Love You’ beginning Monday, May 21.
Based on the trailer, we can see how hyper and always “super” positive the character of Happylou is, a tough role for Barbie to keep during taping. But Barbie says her secret
that helped her survive are simply lots of sleep and coffee. Barbie says she and her character, Happylou, are the similar in a way that she takes it problems very lightly. She doesn’t show it to others, especially when she’s with friends and family. She only shows her happy self when she’s with them. Barbie wishes that Happylou would be a household name as well as Inday Will Always Love You.
Joining Barbie in spreading kilig is Kapuso heartthrob. Derrick Monasterio who in the series plays Patrick, a rich Cebuano bachelor who is tasked to manage the lechon
business of his uncle.‘Inday Will Always Love You’ also marks the return to the small screen of the much-loved DerBie love team after their successful team-up in ‘The Half Sisters’. Derrick says his character, Patrick, is serious yet “pilyo”, being a rich and young who is tasked with managing a business. Similar to his character, he admits he has no charm in doing comedy because he’s “corny”. It’s easier for him to do drama. In real life, however, contrary to Patrick’s personality, Derrick says he is nice and not “pilyo”. He says Barbie is even used to him giving her compliments.
Meanwhile, playing Happylou’s good friend Ernest, a Cebuano musician, is another Kapuso heart throbJuancho Trivino. He reveals that he is the third wheel of the love
team.
Adding color to Happylou’s journey of love and family drama are some of the country’s veteran actors led byRicky Davao who plays Philip Altamira (the rich uncle of Patrick who is a lechon magnate) and Gladys Reyes who plays Amanda Melendez. Also mentioned during the blogcon are Manilyn Reynes who plays Marta (Happylou’s mother), Nova Villa and Tina Paner.
Viewers should also look forward to the characters of Kim Rodriguez, who plays Erica, and Super Tekla, who plays Kimberlou the Cebuano who helps Happylou get work in
Cebu and, eventually, becomes Happylou’s best friend. Kim Rodriguez shared that to prepare for their take and also for safety, she talks to Barbie before their scene which, as shown in their trailer, were really wild. Barbie revealed that in two of their fight scenes she had stunt doubles and thanked their Program Manager for always taking care of them.
Also featured are the all-grown up Lumen Twins Charisseand Charlotte Hermoso. After appearing in Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS), they said they received a text that they needed to fly to Cebu for ‘Inday Will Always Love You’. They
admitted that they are challenged with their “contrabida” roles, aside from the fact that they are working with veteran actors (particularly and affectionately mentioning Gladys
Reyes because of the “contrabida” role). But, however pressured they are, they said they are enjoying what they’re doing because everyone’s so nice to them. The production and even the bosses and the cast helped them with the delivery of their lines, to make it more natural. They consider KMJS as a big opportunity for them to land their roles in ‘Inday Will Always Love You’ and they are grateful to GMA Public Affairs for trusting them with it.
Inday Will Always Love You also features New Zealand-based Pinoy vlogger and Internet Star Kimpoy Feliciano, as well as character actor Buboy Villar and Fliptop Artists Mzhayt and Price Tagg.
At the helm of this upcoming series are directors Monti Parungao and Rember Gelera with headwriters Zig Dulay and Nathan Arciaga.
THE LOCATION
Produced by GMA News and Public Affairs, this newest rom-com series puts the Queen City of the South in the spotlight as it showcases the unique beauty and rich culture of Cebu making it one of the top destinations for international and local tourism. Inday Will Always Love You will also paint the stories of Cebuanos and of the Filipino family as seen through the eyes of Happylou, played by Barbie. Eighty percent (80%) of the scenes are set in Cebu and the cast will go back two more times for more taping.
Cebu made a very good impression on the cast, especially to the Lumen twins as this is their first time in the city. They said the Cebuanos were able to preserve the beauty
and cleanliness of the place, that Cebu’s culture is very rich and they were surprised that the children speak English. The Cebuanos, they say, are very religious and hospitable. Ricky Davao said it was a long journey from Cebu City to Bantayan but it was worth it. Barbie also found Cebu a city with rich culture and religion. She said their producer, GMA Public Affairs, found many concepts in the city’s visuals and facts which they used as a basis on how Inday Will Always Love You will interpret Cebu to the viewers.
THE MUSIC VIDEO
Inday Will Always Love You musical teaser is very entertaining and lively. It is a short musical production but according to Barbie, the shoot took almost one whole day.
Asked if ‘Inday Will Always Love You’ has musical scenes, Barbie mentioned that there are some scenes where Manilyn Reynes, her mother, would sing to her. She said Tina Paner sings in some scenes as well.
CANDIDNESS AT THE BLOGCON
Ricky Davao says that this is a happy cast and working with them makes him feel young. He says he gets motivation and inspiration from them. He considers Barbie Fortaleza, in particular, a model actress with all the qualities of an actress who will go far in this business: very professional, courteous, and beautiful. Professional, that is, she knows what to do on set, has her lines memorized and talks to people. He says he is not saying he’s a fan of Barbie but he’s becoming one. Barbie returns the compliment saying that she is very honored to be recognized by those she looks up to. Gladys Reyes as well says the younger actors are very open and listens to her sharing her experiences, having been in the industry for three decades. She sees their love for their job and loving what they are doing. She is happy because they are willing to learn.
Barbie says she and Derrick are really good friends. She is comfortable working with him. She feels safe when she works with Derrick who she says is really a gentleman on the set. Derrick also said that both their professionalism and objective to get the scenes done made the team up work. Their relationship, their closeness, can be seen on cam and will be translated on screen. And from there, he
says, everything follows.

The One That Got Away airs exciting finale
After 90 nights of bringing good vibes to televiewers, GMA 7’s The One That Got Away is all set to deliver a kilig-filled finale later, (May 18), on GMA Telebabad.
The sexy rom-com series is undeniably a hit among netizens and Kapuso viewers who have consistently followed the extraordinary and crazy lives of Rhian Ramos as “Zoe”, Max Collins as “Darcy” and Kapuso Premier Actress Lovi Poe as “Alex” who formed an unlikely but strong friendship after discovering that in different times in their lives, they were romantically linked with the same guy “Liam” played by Dennis Trillo during different times in their lives.
Lovi reveals it’s an honor for her to play the role of Alex and she will miss working with her co-stars most especially Dennis. “He is very tahimik but very giving. Pag kaeksena mo siya, wow nagshi-shift siya. Ang galing. I’m very happy kasi first time namin ni Dennis na magkaroon ng TV project. Everything is fresh and brand new.”
The Kapuso Premier Actress will definitely treasure this show since they’ve grown as a family on set. “I will also miss everyone’s craziness sa set which is a good thing. Sila Zoe and Darcy especially sila Direk Mark (Sicat Dela Cruz), makukulit lahat talaga.”
Max shares she’s happy she got to work with an amazing cast. “The friendship and the “family” we created on set are really special. We have a great bond and chemistry that’s hard to find in show business.”
She also has many memorable moments portraying the role of Darcy including “our fight scenes because they were pretty wild and fun to do. We were all like kids just playing around.”
Rhian enjoyed portraying her character very much. She’s glad that people loved her character, Zoe, as much as she did. “Sobrang enjoy ako. Sinasabi ko nga sa sarili ko, “Girl, kelan ka pa makakakuha ng ganito, enjoyin mo na siya!” Kasi characters like Zoe don’t just drop on your lap all the time.”
She definitely loved doing the soap because it’s very light and she had a great time working with everyone. “I’m really happy and flattered and natutuwa ako na naeenjoy ng mga tao kasi this is a very different kind of show, medyo experimental siya for us to do. Pero nung tinanggap nila parang, “Ah okay, ready na pala yung audience for this.” Nakakatuwa kasi mas nakaka inspire na maging creative kasi nga out-of-the-box siya, kung saan-saan mo siya pwedeng dalhin,” she said.
Dennis shares that the love and support of the fans and viewers have been their source of strength and inspiration since their pilot airing. “Masarap ang pakiramdam na marami ang nakapanood at hindi nabalewala ang pagod namin. Masaya kami kasi going strong ang The One That Got Away. Nakakatuwa kasi kahit nasa ibang bansa ako, “Liam”, ang tawag sa akin, “he said.
The One That Got Away has a stellar cast including Kapuso heartthrobs Ivan Dorschner, Migo Adecer and Jason Abalos. The series also features Snooky Serna, Bembol Roco; Luz Valdez; Ervic Vijandre; Nar Cabico; Jason Francisco; Patricia Ismael; Kelley Day; Euwenn Aleta with guest stars Renz Fernandez, Sophie Albert and Solenn Heusaff.
